Job Summary:

The School of Medicine and Public Health's (SMPH) Office of Informatics and Information Technology is excited to be adding a new Research Computing Facilitator to our research platforms team! Help support faculty, staff, researchers, and students in a dynamic clinical, academic, and research-focused environment.

The position works across the SMPH enterprise, with a focus on High Performance Computing and in close collaboration with investigators to ensure their research runs effectively on our research computing platform. This position will support onboarding of researchers to SMPH to our on-premises and cloud-based research computing platforms.

Ideal candidates will have excellent time management skills and be able to work independently or collaboratively. Strong documentation and communication skills are required.


Responsibilities:
Advises researchers in the best use of various state-of-the-art cyber infrastructure (CI) systems, tools, and software to enable research productivity. Partners with facilitators and researchers to co-create and co-learn research activities and relevant advanced computing and data capabilities both locally and nationally. Coordinates projects with technical teams to ensure delivery and improvement of research CI services, contributes to strategy for engaging with faculty research groups and building facilitation capacities, and participates in cross-functional management teams and projects. Informs partnerships with other technology groups, internal and external, and contributes to communication with stakeholders.

  • 20% Engages with researchers in their selection and use of relevant CI services, systems, tools, and computing strategies. Leverages an understanding of specific research activities and their use of CI solutions to serve as a liaison between research projects and collaborators. Recommends enhancements to workflows, software, and tools, and provides in-depth consultation to research projects in cooperation with supervised staff
  • 20% Connects and coordinates interactions between researchers and technology providers. Provides regular communications to and leads collaborations with systems and software/data professionals on the design of service enhancements
  • 20% Contributes to the design and content development of documentation and advanced curricula, and instructs at workshops for researchers to maximize their use of CI. Serves as a subject matter expert for trainings relevant to specific areas of science domain and technology, software, or tools
  • 10% Communicates with internal and external collaborators around facilitation and service models. Contributes to research CI community best practices documentation, presents at conferences, and/or publishes in peer reviewed journals
  • 5% Provides consultation and expertise for research proposals. May serve as Co-Principal Investigator for a research proposal or Principal Investigator on proposals around facilitation functions
  • 15% Provides regular communications to researchers and other internal and external stakeholders. May advise institutional or divisional leadership on research CI topics
  • 5% Serves as a bridge between researchers, teams and application support problem solving challenges while also implementing solutions that comply with institutional rules and data related regulations
  • 5% Promotes appropriate human subjects research and collaborates with customers to ensure they follow the policies to protect the rights and welfare of participants

Qualifications:

Required:
- Minimum of 6 years' experience working in a High-Performance Computing (HPC) or High-Throughput Computing (HTC) environment with job scheduling systems (e.g., Slurm, HTCondor)
- Minimum of 5 years of Linux experience
- Experience with scripting or programming languages (e.g., bash, C/C++, Python)
- Knowledge of a variety of scientific computing and data science-based research and relevant tools and workflows
- Experience using or applying technology to curricula, learning, or research in some way
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Effective interpersonal and solid positive customer service skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex or technical concepts for non-specialists

Preferred
- Knowledge and experience with the University of Wisconsin-Madison research community or
research communities in other academic and/or academic medical institutions
- Understanding of the importance of data, computer, and infrastructure requirements of clinical researchers
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA) including security and privacy controls

It is anticipated this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $100,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.


Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship and TN visas. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment.
