POSITION TITLE

Blacksburg Utility Co-Op - Environmental Systems Technician D (Boiler Operator)

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Environmental Tech D is responsible for completing monitoring, reporting, and record keeping for state and federal regulations and per company policies. This includes audits, inspections, calculations, report preparation, and documentation.

This position requires having the "D" level SC Biological Wastewater Operator Certification within two years of hiring. Certification includes a state-issued multiple-choice exam. This position requires the pursuit of the "A" level SC Biological Wastewater Operator Certification.

"D"-level technicians should have previous manufacturing, equipment and operations experience. "D"-level technicians should be available, flexible, eager learners and excellent teammates.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This job entails the following general items:

1. 4 team, Rotating shifts. Total of 15 days ON / 13 days OFF every 28 days.

2. Ability to weekends.

3. Ability to work overtime as needed.

4. Work in an outside, office, and utilities environment.

5. Conduct daily readings.

6. Water Treatment Test.

7. Operating boilers, turbines, air compressors and air dryers

8. Daily team maintenance

9. Environmental compliance

10. Housekeeping.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

1. High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

2. Experience using MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.

3. Computer skills sufficient to enter information into databases and spreadsheets, manipulate data and perform calculations using excel, and type up reports; use email; open, save, close, and create files; and navigate through different computer programs and control systems.

4. Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion.

5. Ability to read and follow written instructions.

6. Ability to create and review written procedures.

7. Math skills including algebra; calculations of area, volume, and concentrations; unit conversations; and problem solving.

8. Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and within time constraints.

9. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple responsibilities.

10. A positive attitude.

11. Ability to be flexible, learn new things, and adapt to change; ability to learn things independently.

12. Good communication skills.

13. Equipment and process trouble shooting

Preferred Experience / Skills:

1. Previous Wastewater Treatment experience.

2. Previous Boiler/filter plant experience.

3. Previous mechanical maintenance experience.

4. Previous environmental experience in any of the following areas: ISO14001, Title V, SARA, RCRA waste, NPDES, asbestos and lead.

5. Experience with MS Access computer program.

6. Basic understanding of pumps, mixers, pH, sampling techniques, chemical feed systems, and lab equipment.

7. 2- or 4- year college degree in science, environmental, or technology related fields.
