THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is seeking a skilled, energetic person to engage with museum visitors of all ages, abilities, and demographics in the exploration and discovery of a unique 19th century American mining culture that helped define the American working class and U.S. industrial might. This position is assigned to the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Scranton Iron Furnaces in Lackawanna County. The Museum Educator 2 provides active leadership in the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of educational programs and interpretation related to the mission of the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Scranton Iron Furnaces. This includes but is not limited to interpretive tours of industrial sites and museum, workshops, classes, lectures, seminars, virtual programs, exhibits, special events, and historical demonstrations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Scranton Iron Furnaces, a heritage complex consisting of a traditional cultural history museum focused on the human story of the hard coal region and the national register listed remnants of one of the most important mid-19th century blast furnaces in the country. Located in northeast Pennsylvania, this museum and historic site serve thousands of visitors annually.

As the Museum Educator 2, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the museums' interpretive and educational programs, ensuring they are based on primary and secondary source historical research and align with current trends in museum education and curriculum standards. You will also have the opportunity to serve as the sites' volunteer coordinator, where you will recruit, retain, train, evaluate, and manage community members in support of museum programs and operations.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 60-minute lunch. Some evening and weekend work for meetings and special events will be required.
  • Telework: While this is primarily an in-office position, you may have the occasional opportunity to work from home (telework) on an ad hoc basis only. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Scranton.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Museum Educator 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which would afford the applicant the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires one or more years of experience in the following (experience must be comparable in scope and responsibility at a museum, historic site, park, or landmark with the mission of preserving and interpreting history):
    • Interpreting or developing educational programming for American working-class and/or industrial history.
  • This particular position also requires one or more years of professional experience in the following (experience must be comparable in scope and responsibility at a museum, historic site, park, or landmark with the mission of preserving and interpreting history):
    • Utilizing digital and computer technology in developing and conducting "virtual" and in-person public programs.
  • This particular position also requires six or more months of experience in the following (experience must be comparable in scope and responsibility at a museum, historic site, park, or landmark with the mission of preserving and interpreting history):
    • Planning, creating, and producing marketing and promotional materials for print and digital use (e.g. print ads, social media, radio, etc).
  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid driver's license, which is not under suspension.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
