JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general direction, provides Port Office staffing and maintains Port Office operations.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: Reporting directly to the Senior Port Engineer, or in his/her absence, the Senior Port Captain, provides leadership for Chief Marine Engineers; coordinates effective ferry operation, maintenance, and repairs with the Chief Marine Engineers, the Deputy Director of Ferry Maintenance, the Port Captain(s), and other personnel; verifies and assists with implementation of management system procedures and ensures regulatory requirements are properly observed by ferry personnel; provides assistance with Maintenance & Repair System (MRS) implementation; maintains familiarity with Critical Equipment and participates in meetings to develop and implement the maintenance and repair plan of the day; assists with processing of repair requests as necessary; assists in the performance of condition inspections; assists with the preparation of Shipyard Specifications; coordinates classification society surveys; ensures safe working practices are adhered to when performing maintenance and repair tasks onboard, and participates in operations meetings to determine operational requirements and daily schedules; assists with coordination between Dock Office and Fuel Facility; and assist with preparations, attendance, and corrective action resulting from USCG inspections and/or SMS audits.
Assist with research and collating of information, managing schedules and projects, and submitting and monitoring purchase orders; drafting, developing, and monitoring Requests for Proposal/Bids, memos, and procedures as required.
Perform additional duties as directed by the Senior Port Engineer, the Senior Port Captain, and the Director of Ferry Operations.
PREFERRED SKILLS: 1.Strong computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook 2.Ability to obtain a FDNY Certificate of Fitness: Supervision of Bulk Oil Plants (P-13) within three months of appointment.
DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates may be required to pass a drug screening to be appointed. Port Engineers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.
TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid license for Chief Engineer of Motor Vessels of any H.P. issued by the United States Coast Guard Inspection Service; or an equivalent license in motor vessels issued by the United States Coast Guard Inspection Service. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
