The General Industrial Division is seeking a collaborative and influential Senior Chemist to support Simplification and Manufacturing activities for Liquid based technologies. The Senior Chemist will improve formulas and processes as identified by the Business and Manufacturing to improve efficiency and quality of Sherwin Williams products to drive simplification. This position is based in the Columbus, Ohio. Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. - Lead projects in the areas of cost savings, product modifications, and complaint investigations
- Provide support and consultation to GI Commercial team, Technical Service, Quality, and Product Management.
- Serve as subject matter expert for
- Solvent-based technology, major and minor formula modifications
- Water-based technology in an active production environment
- Scale up models and ability to shift formula and/or production variables to achieve a desired outcome
- Coating formulation and raw materials within coatings
- Establish timelines and resources needed with minimal changes and input from managers
- Acts as a resource for employees technically and in project management.
- Build influential relationships with managers, customers, vendors, and peers.
- Utilizes internal networks in other functional areas (Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management etc)
- Demonstrates innovation, and initiative in developing new project proposals, and R&D programs of key technical and commercial significance.
- Independently lead projects with little manager direction.
- Manage cross project teams on high technical innovation projects.
- Clearly and concisely communicate to diverse audiences including internal and external customers
- Alter project scope or propose changes based on feedback where applicable.
- Influences others to support an idea/plan and considers the potential impact of the business
- Assists in or recommends staffing for projects
- Provides team support by encouraging collaboration and providing suggestions/resources to overcome obstacles.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
- Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
- 5 years of lab experience in coatings
- Competent Math Skills
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Proven project leadership/management
- Technical Depth in a given area of expertise
- Experience with solvent-borne base coat / clear coat urethane chemistries.
- Experience with adhesion promoters and conductive primers for plastics application.
- Experience with solvent-borne and water-borne epoxy and urethane chemistries.
- Experience with project management tools.
- Familiarity with application and troubleshooting of industrial coatings.
- Practical understanding of spectral measurement data.
- Computer knowledge for basic inputting, communication, and data analysis
- Math knowledge
- Analytical chemistry and the ability to extend it beyond the realm of coatings.
- Proven problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Ability to adapt and change quickly in response to new situations/demands.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Design of Experiment
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree or higher in a Science related area.
- Minimum of 10 years of industrial coatings formulation
- High level of initiative and leadership ability
- Excellent organization and planning skills
- Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances
- Proven problem solving and decision-making skills and abilities
- Experience working in cross-functional teams
