Job Overview

The Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior is responsible for assisting clinical professionals, such as Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians, in providing optimal nutritional care to hospitalized patients through accurate, safe, and timely handling, storage, preparation and distribution of formulas and/or human milk to patients and families. Additionally, provides basic education and guidance to both inpatient and outpatient families.

Shift: Day shift 10 hr shifts, some 6 hr shifts. Includes some weekends and rotating holidays.

Qualifications

Education: Associate degree in a related field is required.
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of healthcare-related experience, preferably in a hospital setting
Equivalency: Minimum of two years of college credit in a healthcare-related field, such as Medical Nutrition, Anatomy and/or Physiology or certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or as a Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Advanced Lactation Consultant (ALC) or Pharmacy Technician may be considered in lieu of a degree.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

Employees in this position may work in designated roles in either the Human Milk Lab, Formula Lab or in both areas. In addition, not all these functions may be required at all Children's Hospital Colorado locations.
Core (Formula Lab and Human Milk Lab Roles)
1. Retrieves, reviews, and verifies patient human milk and/or formula orders via EMR.
2. Prepares human milk and/or formula according to provider orders using aseptic technique.
3. Delivers prepared human milk and/or formula to the designated locations in an accurate and timely manner.
4. Utilizes critical thinking, communication, customer service and emotional intelligence to effectively triage formula and human milk lab calls and in person interactions.
5. Communicates with supervisor, RD's, RNs, and care teams regarding concerns related to human milk and/or formula orders, mixing recipes, storage, and administration.
6. Maintains a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly formula/human milk lab, ensuring department standards are met and that all cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting activities of storage areas, preparation areas and equipment are conducted and documented in accordance with relevant policies and procedures and in compliance with federal, state and local health regulations.
Human Milk Lab Role
7. Receives expressed human milk from mothers who are dropping off. Records and maintains an accurate inventory of human milk stored in the lab.
8. Communicates with care team through daily rounding to consider factors impacting feedings to be prepared.
9. Accurately calculates ingredient components, and accurately measures all ingredient components for all human milk mixtures.
10. Scans all human milk at various intervals to ensure accurate tracking and safe delivery.
11. Ensures appropriate education to parents for proper labeling, transport, and storage of human milk.
12. Provides milk expression education to mothers of inpatients, outpatients and by telephone.
13. Receives and maintains donated human milk from the community for delivery to the Mother's Milk Bank of Colorado through designation as a human milk bank outreach and donation center.
14. Tracks and maintains a breast pump rental/loan program for families and staff.
Formula Lab Role
15. Maintains an adequate inventory of formula lab supplies and formulas by performing daily inventory and stocking. Rotates formulas and supplies using FIFO (first in, first out).
16. Assesses daily utilization of formulas and proactively alerts supervisor of concerns for surges in use of non-stock formulas, non-formulary formulas that could result in potential out of stock situations.
17. Coordinates with RD's and Clinical Nutrition leadership on non-formulary formula orders to ensure compliance to hospital formulary where possible, to secure prior approval for use of non-formulary formulas, to ensure accuracy of ingredient calculations, and that adequate stock of non-formulary formula is available for duration of patient's admission.
18. Accurately calculates ingredient components, and accurately measures all ingredient components for all formula mixtures, including routine double check of work partner's work.
19. Utilizes nutrition knowledge of infant, pediatric and adult patient populations and formulas to appropriately reach out to RD's and medical care team to clarify physician orders for formula that may not be ordered correctly or may not be appropriate for the patient.
20. Provide basic education to patients and families on formula mixing instructions where appropriate and under RD supervision.

Hourly Rate of Pay: $20.59
