The Job The Release Train Engineer (RTE) plays a key role in facilitating the Agile Release Train (ART), driving product execution, removing impediments, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in the organization. The RTE ensures that the ART delivers value consistently through effective planning, coordination, and collaboration across multiple agile teams. They are responsible for organizing and facilitating key SAFe events such as Planning Interval (PI) Planning, System Demos, and Inspect and Adapt (I&A) workshops. This role requires deep expertise in the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and strong leadership and coaching skills. You Will Facilitate Agile Release Train (ART) Execution:
- Oversee and facilitate the end-to-end execution of the Agile Release Train (ART), ensuring teams are aligned and delivering on the PI's objectives.
- Ensure the ART delivers incremental value with each iteration and PI, meeting the goals and quality standards set by the organization.
- Continuously monitor and improve ART performance by identifying and addressing impediments, risks, and issues that may impact delivery.
Planning Interval (PI) Planning & Execution:
- Organize and facilitate PI Planning events, ensuring alignment across teams and the proper definition and prioritization of objectives and features.
- Coordinate with Product Managers and Product Owners to ensure that backlogs are ready for PI Planning and that key objectives are clearly communicated to all teams.
- Track and monitor PI progress, ensuring that ART commitments are met and helping teams course-correct as needed.
Facilitation of SAFe Events:
- Facilitate regular ART ceremonies such as PI Planning, ART syncs, System Demos, Inspect and Adapt (I&A) events, and Scrum of Scrums to ensure that teams are aligned, dependencies are managed, and risks are addressed.
- Drive System Demos to showcase the ART's progress to stakeholders, ensuring the delivery of valuable and working software at the end of each increment.
- Lead the I&A workshops to identify areas of improvement, celebrate successes, and implement changes for better team performance.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management:
- Act as the main point of contact for coordinating communication and collaboration between teams, stakeholders, Product Managers, and other ARTs.
- Work closely with business owners and stakeholders to ensure alignment on business priorities, helping to manage expectations and delivery timelines.
- Foster collaboration across teams and manage dependencies within the ART and with external teams and stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement & Coaching:
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement within the ART by driving retrospectives and ensuring that the teams are learning from previous iterations.
- Provide coaching and support to Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and other team members to help them improve their Agile practices and SAFe competencies.
- Identify and implement process improvements across the ART to streamline operations, reduce bottlenecks, and improve overall delivery speed and quality.
Risk Management & Problem Solving:
- Identify, assess, and manage risks and impediments that could block or delay execution, ensuring swift resolution or escalation as needed.
- Work closely with teams to address roadblocks, drive problem-solving sessions, and mitigate risks to ensure that the ART remains on track.
- Ensure transparency across the ART, providing stakeholders with visibility into the progress of work, potential risks, and delivery outcomes.
Metrics & Reporting:
- Monitor key ART metrics such as ART velocity, burn-down rates, feature delivery rates, and predictability to assess performance.
- Provide regular reporting and updates to leadership and stakeholders on the ART's progress and performance metrics.
- Use data and insights to drive decisions and improvements in ART operations and delivery.
Your Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- SAFe certifications such as SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE), SAFe Agilist, or SAFe Practice Consultant (SPC) required
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience in an RTE role or similar position within a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environment.
- Extensive experience in managing and facilitating Agile Release Trains (ARTs) with multiple teams working in a large-scale Agile environment.
- Prior experience in a Scrum Master, Agile Coach, or similar role with hands-on expertise in Agile practices and methodologies.
Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and its principles, including knowledge of key roles, events, and processes within an ART.
- SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification or other relevant SAFe certifications (e.g., SAFe Agilist, SAFe Practice Consultant) is highly preferred.
Leadership & Facilitation Skills:
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to lead and coordinate teams across multiple projects.
- Excellent facilitation skills, with the ability to drive productive discussions and decision-making in a collaborative environment.
- Experience facilitating large-scale events like PI Planning sessions and System Demos.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate complex ideas to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Proven ability to build relationships and foster collaboration across teams and departments, ensuring alignment on goals and priorities.
Problem-Solving & Risk Management:
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly assess and mitigate risks and remove impediments.
- Ability to navigate complex challenges and drive problem-solving in fast-paced environments.
Tools & Technologies:
- Familiarity with Agile project management tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jira, Rally, VersionOne) to manage and track progress across the ART.
- Proficiency in using SAFe-related metrics and reporting tools to monitor and optimize ART execution.
