Position Highlights

The Department of Political Economy and Moral Science (PEMS) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in PPEL (philosophy, politics, economics and law) beginning in August 2025.

The PEMS Department sponsors an undergraduate major program in Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law (PPEL) and a master's program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). The PEMS position is a joint initiative with the University of Arizona Center for the Philosophy of Freedom (Freedom Center), an interdisciplinary center that provides research, teaching and programming at the intersection of philosophy, economic, law and ethics. The successful candidate will promote the interdisciplinary mission of the PPEL and PPE programs, as well as that of the Freedom Center. They will be required to teach: (i) core courses in the PPEL and PPE programs, (ii) advanced PPEL and PPE elective courses, and (iii) introductory PPEL courses that also serve the University of Arizona's general education program. The successful applicant will also be a core faculty member in the Freedom Center.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach four
    courses a year distributed across the PPEL B.A. program, the PPE M.A. program
    and the university general education program. Such courses may include (but are
    not limited to): Capitalism and Socialism, Economics and Ethics of Wealth
    Creation, and Classics in Political Economy.
  • Maintain an active research
    program.
  • Provide service to the PEMS
    Department, including with undergraduate recruitment to the PPEL major, the
    Freedom Center, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the University
    of Arizona and the profession.
  • Workload 40%
    Teaching, 40% Research, 20% Service/Outreach.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Teaching competence in any of the PPEL disciplines or their intersection.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in any of the PPEL disciplines or
    their intersection (philosophy, political science, economics or law).
  • Demonstrated excellence in research, teaching and outreach.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with engaging communities and the public in applied research and outreach activities.
  • Experience mentoring students.
