Position Highlights |
The College of Environmental Science is looking for an enthusiastic Research Data Support Specialist II. The laboratory of Dr. Hoover is seeking a qualified individual to support data collation, warehousing, and architecture support for the Southwestern Center on Resilience for Climate and Health (SCORCH). This position will support the data visualization core and other tasks for SCORCH projects as needed. The individual will gather flat and spatial data related to climate and health from multiple sources, link them together and to health data, and create data dashboards for public access. At the Department of Environmental Science, our goal is to be a premier center for learning, research and outreach that finds solutions to diverse environmental challenges to improve the quality of all life. Our research spans the full depth of environmental sciences with expertise in arid and semi-arid and water-limited regions. From microbial ecology and pollution dynamics to environmental justice and water equality, we educate and train future generations to solve environmental issues at the intersection of biology, chemistry, physics and social sciences. This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position. Duties & Responsibilities |
Create a data architecture for climate related data:
- Identify potential data sources with supervisors.
- Gather and download these data, possibly scraping from websites and other publicly available sources.
- Data will be collated at the household or zip code level, and will be cleaned and manipulated to have nested spatial and temporal resolutions.
- Data operations will include receiving, coding, reviewing, entering, cleaning, and reconciling research data.
Create data dashboards for the public:
- Under supervision, make the data sharable, consistent with data use agreements, IRB, HIPAA, and NIH requirements.
- Data sharing and data dashboards should be easily accessible for general population users.
- Candidate will provide data and reports on usage and accessibility to researchers and other stakeholders as needed.
- Writing up descriptions for papers, providing copy editing for websites and data, communicating with stakeholders to complete tasks, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge with manipulating large data sets, expertise in geospatial applications or willingness to learn.
- Coding proficiency in R and/or python.
- Familiarity with human subjects and data privacy, and FAIR principles.

Minimum Qualifications |
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Background working in data science.
- Experience working with climate, public health, and environmental health datasets.
