A Brief Overview The Senior Labor Relations Specialist is a hands-on role focused on supporting the day-to-day administration of labor relations activities. This position serves as the front-line resource for addressing union-related matters, resolving employee grievances, and ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs). The Senior Specialist works closely with union representatives, employees, and management to maintain positive labor relations and a productive workplace environment.
What you will do
- Union Interaction and Support:
- Serve as the first point of contact for union representatives on routine matters.
- Address inquiries related to CBAs, work conditions, and employee issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Participate in labor-management meetings and ensure follow-through on action items.
- Grievance Resolution:
- Handle initial grievance filings, conduct investigations, and provide recommendations for resolution.
- Facilitate discussions between employees, management, and union representatives to resolve issues efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of grievances and resolutions to ensure compliance and reporting accuracy.
- Organizational Development and Training:
- Collaborates with Learning and Organizational Effectiveness specialists in developing, implementing, presenting, and evaluating training programs to address labor relation needs.
- Review employee relations and performance management trends and submit recommended training initiatives.
- Assess climate to determine any opportunities for team building, conflict resolution, succession planning, culture and change management.
- Contract Administration:
- Monitor adherence to the terms of CBAs and assist in resolving disputes related to contract interpretation.
- Provide guidance to managers and supervisors on CBA requirements and policies.
- Track and report on key contract-related metrics, such as seniority lists, work assignments, and disciplinary actions.
- Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure labor relations activities comply with applicable labor laws and organizational policies.
- Maintain detailed records and documentation of all labor relations activities, including grievances, meetings, and outcomes.
- Assist in preparing for labor negotiations by gathering data and supporting research efforts.
- Benefits and Compensation:
- Collaborates with the Benefits and Compensation specialists to resolve issues related to contract agreements. Builds awareness when there are potential needs to be addressed during avoidance campaigns.
- Employee Relations:
- Supports Employee Relations and Business Partner Services providing advice on labor and relation policies and practices.
- Leadership:
- Serves in preceptor role for HR staff. Assists the manager in coordinating the work of the team to meet deadlines and complete projects.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Required
Experience Qualifications
- At least five (5) years related professional experience Required
- Experience in a complex organization Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Effective communication and human relation skills (Required proficiency)
- Critical thinking, decision-making and relationship building skills (Required proficiency)
- Experience in conflict resolution and basic business acumen (including planning) skills. (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrated knowledge of all human resource functions (Required proficiency)
