Critical Mineral Demand Researcher, The Payne Institute for Public Policy

Posting Number: JR106411
Location: Colorado

Engineering a world of possibilities
The Payne Institute for Public Policy at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) is seeking an exceptional researcher to work on a project focused on critical mineral demand modelling. The goal of the project is to build on our previous research and develop a world-class demand model, focused on the United States, that looks in detail at various critical minerals and their role in a low-carbon energy transition.
The demand model will take careful attention of the various prospects for recycling of materials and how they can be used to lower overall demand. The demand model will draw from various existing energy scenarios from both the IEA and the EIA (US DOE) to develop scenarios about total installed capacity of technologies like solar and wind. The researcher will work in coordination with a large, interdisciplinary academic team and have primary responsibility for data and model implementation, as well as conducting the model-based analysis.

Through integrated modeling, combining expertise in mining, engineering, manufacturing, and business, the outputs of the modeling will answer questions such as: How will new markets for the critical minerals develop? How will manufacturing footprints in sectors such as automotive, cement, and others change as a result? How will value chains and markets in these growing sectors change? How does recycling impact demand? The changing demand for critical minerals effects on communities, markets, trade, security, geopolitics, prices, and technology development are key questions that will also be explored.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in mining or metallurgical engineering, environmental engineering, statistics, economics, or a related discipline.
  • Proven analytical and research experience
  • 0-2 Years Experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Related experience in industry, academics, or government
  • Specific experience with Python, GitHub, Pyomo, Pandas, R, and relational databases are a definite plus
  • The ideal candidate should also have the ability to think broadly about climate mitigation pathways and climate policy
  • Master's Degree or PhD in engineering, economics, or a related field is preferred
  • Publication record, as proven by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, or technical books

Duration:
  • Initial one year period, with possible extension
