Purpose of the Job The Manager of Accounting oversees the operations of the accounting department within a large financial institution with assets greater than $5 billion, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO) accounting standards. This role is responsible for analyzing past and present financial operations, estimating future revenues and expenditures, and providing oversight of the general ledger. The Manager of Accounting handles escalated accounting issues, fosters a positive work environment, and ensures department goals and project milestones are met within the approved budget. Additionally, the position reviews and recommends new methods and procedures to improve daily operations and drive efficiencies. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Manages accounting functions to ensure compliance with GAAP and CUSO accounting principles, timeliness, and efficiency, enabling confidence in financial reporting.
- Manages the assistant accounting manager as well as accounting staff, including assigning tasks, training, coaching, performance reviews, hiring, and remediation.
- Develops, evaluates, and improves new and existing accounting processes while ensuring adherence to organizational accounting policies and maintaining adequate controls.
- Directs the financial close process within tight timeframes, with a focus on accuracy and quality.
- Analyzes past and present financial operations, estimates future revenues and expenditures, and provides oversight of the general ledger.
- Implements, administers, and optimizes accounting for the insurance subsidiary.
- Oversees the preparation of credit union tax forms and ensures all filing deadlines are met.
- Communicates financial data and operational information to all levels of management, auditors, regulators, and external agencies/vendors to support informed decision-making.
- Implements, administers, and optimizes the use of accounting software systems and related integrations, including collaboration with software vendors, other departments, and peer institutions.
- Collaborates with internal departments to resolve issues, streamline processes, and drive efficiencies.
- Actively participates in committees and project teams to develop and execute strategic initiatives.
- Develops and monitors the department's budget and business plan.
- Maintains Business Continuity Plan (BCP) procedures and scorecard requirements.
- Ensures accounting procedures are maintained and reviewed annually for training and business continuity preparation.
- Ensures that proprietary, confidential, and sensitive data is protected.
- Manages financial transactions related to the insurance operations, including commission reconciliations and premium processing.
- Ensures accurate reporting of insurance-related financials and compliance with industry regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have an extensive comprehension of GAAP and CUSO accounting principles.
- Must have demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to train, coach, conduct performance reviews, and oversee hiring processes.
- Establish and cultivate a professional accounting network to assess and analyze emerging trends, industry developments, and best practices for continuous improvement.
- Must have superior analytical skills to interpret and analyze financial information.
- Must possess advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools.
- Must have the technical aptitude to learn and implement different accounting software systems and reconciliation tools.
- Must demonstrate the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve issues using sound judgment that aligns with industry standards, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Must have the ability to generate and analyze research data, including a strong working knowledge of appropriate financial analysis and reconciliation techniques.
- Must have a comprehensive understanding of business processes within the financial institution.
- Must foster a positive and collaborative working environment, maintaining professional communication across all levels and possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to the institution's members.
- Must be adaptable and demonstrate a willingness to upgrade skills to meet changing job requirements.
- Must be results-oriented and demonstrate initiative and be able to work independently and make critical decisions.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Must be able to manage responsibilities effectively in both an office and remote work environment and be flexible and able to shift resources and priorities as required.
Physical Requirements
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required.
- Must be able to sit at a desk for extended periods while using a computer.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 5 pounds moderately and up to 10 pounds occasionally.
Education and Background
- A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA certification required or must successfully complete certification within 18 months of employment.
- CMA certification accepted with relevant work history.
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience required.
- Knowledge of financial industry accounting preferred.
