Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
Fayetteville State University ( FSU), a public comprehensive, historically Black university, offers robust and innovative degree programs rooted in the liberal arts tradition. FSU's Office of Strategic Communication (OSC) is housed within the Office of the Chancellor. The OSC is charged with planning, creating, and implementing communication strategies to engage target audiences to include prospective students, current students, families of prospective and current students, faculty and staff, donors, partners, decision-makers, and the media. The purpose of the engagement is to increase enrollment, partnerships, support, and financial contributions, per FSU's strategic plan.
Description of Work Continued:
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Director of Media Relations ( DMR) will be responsible for leading the planning and execution of a strategic media and public relations strategy aligned with the brand objectives and strategic vision of the university as determined by the Associate Vice Chancellor of Strategic Communication. The DRM will cultivate and sustain relationships with campus colleagues and national, regional, local and specialty media. This individual will proactively identify and pursue news stories that demonstrate Fayetteville State University's strategic vision and leadership attributes in the higher education industry, as well as other topics that advance its relationships with key stakeholders. Working in partnership with university leadership and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communication, the director will regularly strategize, develop, and execute proactive and reactive media engagement activities with top-tier specialty media in addition to important national, state, regional and local outlets.
The director will explore public relations opportunities by leveraging digital media channels and converting university goals and strategy into actionable and effective media and public relations. The director will be an effective storyteller, producing stories for FSU Magazine, the web, and electronic newsletters in addition to executive-level communications such as presentations, speeches, op-eds, letters, and blog posts as required.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
Master's degree plus 3 years or more of experience in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs, or related field. Will accept relevant bachelor's degree and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Ability to think on your feet and orally communicate in a concise yet persuasive manner.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and ability to present complex information in an interesting and compelling way.
  • Demonstrated creativity and initiative working with internal partners to identify opportunities to generate favorable new coverage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and basic social media platforms.
  • Management/supervisory skills.
  • Strategic thinker who works with integrity, ethics and maintains confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education.
