The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Horticulture, Foothill College.

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean of Health Sciences and Horticulture, the instructor will teach community college environmental science and horticulture courses to a diverse student body in a college committed to student equity. The instructor will be expected to teach across a range of topics, including but not limited to landscape design, landscape construction, plant identification, plant maintenance, plant production, green industry business, pest management, sustainability, and other related horticultural subjects.

Secondary duties could include activities such as student recruitment and advising; act as liaison between the college and professional and/or educational organizations and community advisory groups; develop, implement, and evaluate curriculum in the subject matter of expertise in both the laboratory and lecture where appropriate.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

Teaching assignments will be in-person instruction at Foothill campus. Faculty are expected to engage in professional contributions on the Foothill campus throughout the academic year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. The minimum qualifications for this discipline: any bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

We encourage individuals to apply for the position even if they do not meet all the preferred qualifications below.
  1. Experience teaching a variety of horticulture lecture and laboratory courses at the community college level.
  2. Adaptable teaching pedagogy that accommodates diverse learning styles, with an emphasis on interactive multimedia, internet resources, and hands-on lab experiences effectively engaging academically and culturally diverse students.
  3. Ability to effectively teach and communicate with students from diverse backgrounds, including varying age groups, genders, ethnicities, and educational and economic experiences.
  4. Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively as part of a team with administrators, faculty, and support staff.
  5. Familiarity with the techniques and equipment required to teach horticulture-related subjects in lecture, laboratory, or clinical settings.
  6. A collaborative approach to working closely with faculty and support staff.
  7. Skills in developing curriculum and effectively engaging academically and culturally diverse students.
  8. Strong communication abilities to articulate ideas clearly and effectively with individuals of varying ages, genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
  9. The ability to inspire students to take ownership of their learning, while fostering the development of critical thinking skills.
  10. Experience developing and implementing a diverse range of assessment strategies to track student learning and engagement.
  11. Experience dealing with health and safety issues in the classroom and/or in the field related to the landscape industry.

Operation of Horticultural equipment which may include:

  1. Large equipment such as tractors, skid-steers and all-terrain vehicles
  2. Powered construction equipment such as masonry saw, chainsaw.
  3. Construction tools
  4. Landscape power tools such as mowers, sod cutter, rototiller.

Management of Horticultural facilities including:
  1. Greenhouse
  2. Nursery
  3. Plant Gardens
  4. Construction Lab

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:
  1. Indoor, office and classroom environment.
  2. Indoor, outdoor lab environment
  3. Off campus locations

Physical Abilities:

HIRING RANGE: $72,704.00 - $119,405.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 10-months per year.
