The UEIS (University Education and Information Services) division at Carnegie Mellon University supports various interdisciplinary programs and administrative functions within the university. It oversees areas such as the University Libraries, the IDeATe (Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology) program, the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), Sustainability initiatives, and Hunt Botanical resources. The division includes roles in external relations, advancement, project management, and financial administration, playing a crucial role in facilitating educational and research initiatives at CMU.

The University Library and Open Forum on AI is looking for a postdoctoral candidate who will be integral to new initiatives involving curricular innovation, prototypes and research involving open AI, AI for education, and AI safety, and supporting the instruction of new courses related to cross-disciplinary skill sets related to the development and assessment of emerging technologies and AI.

This post-doc position will involveresponsibilities including:

  • Supporting teaching and instructional innovation as part of new program development related to emerging technologies, humanity, and the near future.
  • The development of new courses and curriculum at the intersection of technology and humanity (e.g., AI Safety, Trustworthy AI, Public Discourse in Technology, AI Alignment)
  • Managing and growing research threads related to AI and education, AI Safety, technology in the public interest, and Open AI ecosystems.
  • Implementing and documenting new AI prototypes and technical tools for research and open source
  • Assisting in creating public education initiatives related to technology such as events, open education models, and other open access materials.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree required. Background in a technology-related field such as computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or machine learning preferred.
  • Experience and interest in teaching, knowledge and interest in humanities-perspectives on technology (ie., philosophy, social sciences, or arts), and is comfortable working in interdisciplinary settings.
  • Experience or work in AI development and related techniques highly desired.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Fixed Term: This is a fixed term position with an estimated duration of 12 months.
