Position Summary
This position contributes to the expertise of the Writing Resource Center (Center) by concentrating on diverse learners, through collaboration with the Director and Writing Advisors. This position utilizes inclusive practices and provides high quality programming that is attentive to UIC Law's culturally and linguistically diverse community of students.

This position primarily works with students, providing effective coaching to promote understanding of the legal writing process, self-regulated learning, and other fundamental writing skills including grammar, punctuation, and citation while supporting WRC's overall programming.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and advise the Center on best practices and incorporate resources and technologies to strengthen reading skills and engagement in the writing process for diverse learners, including but not limited to, multilingual learners and students who receive accommodations.
  • Assist students at all ability levels with improving reading comprehension and understanding their writing process while empowering them to develop competency by leveraging their diverse strengths and backgrounds.
  • Communicate effectively, with consideration of how social, cultural, and power dynamics may impact written communication.
  • Utilize technology-based resources, including artificial intelligence to aid students in the development of reading and writing competencies.
  • Provide specialized individual and group coaching sessions to diverse learners through face-to-face and virtual conferences, focusing on interconnected skills in all phases of the writing process.
  • Present workshops on various legal writing topics.
  • Raise awareness about the Center's services and its impact on students' literacy skills.
  • Participate in the Center's strategic planning, program development, and provide recommendations
  • Serve on relevant UIC committees as needed and assigned.
  • Engage, as opportunities present, in national and regional service related to the legal writing discipline and writing center best practices.
  • Attend meetings as needed and assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Bilingual Education, ESL, or a related field of study.
    • Background in supporting English learners, learners of diverse backgrounds and abilities, and students at varied ranges of reading and writing levels.
    • Familiarity with plans under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
    • A minimum of four years' experience working in a professional setting, either in academia or comparable setting.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with diverse students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
    • Success working with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to build collaborative relationships across WRC team members, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
    • Advanced research skills.
    • Proficient with a range of technology tools and software, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Windows and Office products, AI tools, internet resources and other writing resources.
    • Ability to define problems, analyze data, and develop action plans as part of a continuous improvement cycle.
    • Ability to use technology as a teaching and learning tool, as well as to create reports and presentations.
    • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple and varied tasks to meet deadlines and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
    • Attention to detail and commitment to exceptional work quality standards; strong problem-solving skills and ability to use independent judgment and initiative in making decisions; ability to identify and analyze complex issues and problems and to recommend and implement solutions; and a high level of discretion and confidentiality.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's Degree in Education or related fields.
    • A minimum of two years' experience in a writing center setting at a law school.
    • Prior teaching experience at any level, preferably with students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Strong desire to make a substantial contribution to higher education.
