About the Job

The MN Landscape Arboretum Security Patrol position provides support for the safety and security of Arboretum/HRC "Horticultural Research Center" guests; provides information to Arboretum guests in the gardens and ensures that visitors do not damage exhibits, displays or objects through misuse and reports any visible damage to the supervisor on duty.

This is a temporary position (no more than 67 days total worked). Shifts could vary Monday - Sunday including day and evening. All work is completed onsite at the MN Landscape Arboretum and HRC in Chaska, MN.

Responsibilities
90% Security & Public Safety

  • Provide security for the Arboretum/HRC and its Visitors, Staff, Buildings, Exhibits, Displays and Objects
  • Protect guests, exhibits, displays and objects by politely enforcing Arboretum policies including those regarding climbing on exhibits, sculptures, waterfalls and associated hazardous areas
  • Monitor traffic on 3-Mile Drive and parking areas
  • Patrol exhibit, display gardens, trails and plant collections at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum/HRC via patrol cart or on foot; be visible to guests and ready to provide information on locations of exhibits, restrooms, classes, gardens, picnic areas and related items
  • Be the first to respond to any injury or accident that occurs on Arboretum/HRC grounds
  • Be informed of times and locations of tours, special programs and events
  • Respond to weather, fire, accidents, infrastructure problems, traffic, guest problems, illegal activities or other emergency situations
  • Inspect buildings and grounds for irregularities such as fire or potential fire hazards, water or gas leaks and unauthorized persons in an area
  • Closes doors and windows left open, turns off lights inadvertently left on
  • Controls access to activity centers such as libraries and research centers
  • May check credentials of person desiring access to an activity
  • Irregular/Special occasion tasks
  • Locks down all buildings and gates and insures all guests have exited at closing
  • Performs other security related duties as assigned

10% Reporting and Administration

  • Reports all irregularities needing correction such as hazardous fire conditions, hazards to the public
  • Files all injury and accident reports in a timely manner
  • Assist in evaluating the security needs of the Arboretum to help develop and grow the security program

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver's licenses
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check
  • Previous experience in security in a public setting
  • Current CPR, First Aid and Defibrillator certification
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact with guests of all ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups.
  • Requires the ability to stand for up to 4 hours on a continuous basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Landscape Arboretum/HRC programs, grounds and buildings.
  • Previous experience in security at an Arboretum, Botanical Garden, Nature Center, Museum, or Educational Facility
  • Previous training or coursework as security or peace officer or law enforcement or military equivalent experience
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
