Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Research Scientist II will join the Bureau of Surveillance and Data Systems (BSDS)'s Electronic Syndromic Surveillance System (ESSS) team to conduct research and coordinate the syndromic surveillance efforts utilizing syndromic data for opioid and drug overdose related surveillance. The Research Scientist II will coordinate activities for the OD2A-S project funded by the CDC, work closely with the Office of Drug User Health, other state offices, and Local Health Departments (LHDs) on drug overdose surveillance, and be responsible for OD2A-S grant deliverables. The Research Scientist II will conduct research to validate and refine syndrome definitions, create and modify SAS filters, generate surveillance reports, and monitor alerts to detect drug overdose spikes and outbreaks. The Research Scientist II will help maintain the ESSS report module, research and enhance outbreak detection methods, create syndromic surveillance reports, update user guides and documents, and train users to utilize ESSS for disease surveillance. The Research Scientist II will prepare peer-reviewed presentations, abstracts, and publications for best practices of syndromic surveillance. Other job duties will be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, a related social science, or a closely related field and three years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Doctorate degree in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with study and research design, such as deciding appropriate data elements needed, determining statistical analysis methodologies, composing peer-reviewed presentations, abstracts, and publications, and developing written recommendations for program evaluations. Knowledge of disease coding schemes as ICD-10 code and/or HL7 language, programming and analytical skills using SAS and/or SQL, large database management and/or data analysis experience of using data from a relational database, and experience in public health program evaluations. Demonstrated, efficient oral and written communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.
