The UEIS (University Education and Information Services) division at Carnegie Mellon University supports various interdisciplinary programs and administrative functions within the university. It oversees areas such as the University Libraries, the IDeATe (Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology) program, the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), Sustainability initiatives, and Hunt Botanical resources. The division includes roles in external relations, advancement, project management, and financial administration, playing a crucial role in facilitating educational and research initiatives at CMU.

The Facility Assistant is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Technology Lending Office and will also be tasked with general maintenance and upkeep of assigned spaces in Hunt Library. This role will work closely with the operations team to ensure that the building is welcoming for students, staff, and faculty. The Facility Assistant acts as a point of contact for building occupants, addressing their concerns, and coordinating maintenance and cleaning activities.

There are two vacancies for this position, one with working hours Monday through Friday 9am-5pm, the second being Wednesday through Sunday 12pm-8pm. Both roles may have some variations to the schedule based on library hours around holidays and breaks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages the day-to-day operation of the lending service, including inventory management, room setup, reserving equipment for events, and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Unboxes, tags, labels, adds to inventory, shelves, and distributes purchased items.
  • In the absence of student workers, this role will be responsible for running the lending desk.
  • Performs daily inventory checks.
  • Maintains knowledge of existing equipment and has a working knowledge of current technology, staying informed about advancements in technology to recommend new equipment purchases and enhance service offerings.
  • Demonstrates how to operate the equipment in the lending office, including best practices, to ensure respectful handling of equipment, and safety to the guests.
  • Train student workers on how to properly maintain equipment and process check-ins and check-outs.
  • Collaborate with IDeATe faculty to understand lending equipment needs and tailor services accordingly.
  • Assist with the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the IDeATe facilities in Hunt Library to include assigned labs, classrooms, shops, studios, and equipment rooms.
  • Completes routine checks and maintenance for IDeATe and Library spaces.
  • Respond to help tickets submitted via the IDeATe ticket system.
  • Maintains functional condition and organization of the rooms. Ensure rooms are clean and organized. May, on occasion, include sweeping, vacuuming, and emptying of cans and scrap bins.
  • Contacting FMS for minor repairs in spaces
  • Respond to and resolve building-related issues and emergencies.
  • Collects packages from the shipping and receiving room and may occasionally be required to assist with receiving freight deliveries at the curb.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Proven experience in facilities management, building operations, technology or other related experience preferred.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
