Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to either Kalamazoo, Hamilson, Norton Shores, Lansing, Howell, Livonia, Royal Oak, Saginaw, and/or the Parnall Service Center. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Civil Engineer will provide design, planning, and oversight for the construction of infrastructure moderately complex projects. These can include renovation and construction of varying structures such as buildings, dams, pipelines, etc. The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. They will oversee the work of lower-level engineers and technicians on moderately complex projects.

The Senior Civil Engineer provides civil engineering leadership for natural gas capital projects, including gas distribution, transmission, city gates/regulator stations, compression and storage facilities. This individual will reside in the civil engineering group and support capital upgrade projects. The individual will be assigned to project teams which will consists of a multidiscipline group of project engineers, project managers, operations and others to support projects.

This person will be involved in several projects and to varying degrees of involvement. The role will be to (1) identify/scope the civil engineering design and construction scope necessary to complete the project (2) contract engineering services necessary to complete the scope (3) provide engineering review and technical leadership (4) assist the project manager in contracting construction services to complete the scope of work (5) complete closeout activities (record drawings, test records, etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sets design specifications by computing load and grade requirements, material stress factors, flow rates, and similar parameters
  • Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
  • Estimates materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs
  • Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables as required
  • Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as environmental impact statements and right-of-way descriptions that adhere to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations
  • Collaborates with internal coworkers, architects, contractors, surveyors to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction & to ensure projects progress properly
  • Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met; upon completion of a project, inspects, repairs, and maintains the structures as needed
  • Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs
  • Assesses strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel by testing materials and soil using appropriate methods to ensure safe modifications/building
  • Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary
  • Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary and related systems and structures such as transportation or hydraulics
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software
  • Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, pipelines, and other related structures
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical
  • Detail-oriented and accurate

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of relevant experience

    • [OR] Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from anon-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with four (4) or more years of relevant experience
