Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $34.36./hr to $76.13/hr*. Final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the full range for a position.

This position requires Illinois residency within 180 days of the hire date.(RNs only)

Position Summary

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice model, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies. The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to patient's changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient's plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family.

  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.

  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.

  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.

  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient's changing needs.

  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.

  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.

  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.

  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.

  • Monitors and documents the patient's condition pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post procedure

  • Assess and address pain levels, administer appropriate pain medications, and monitor the patient's response to pain management interventions

  • Administers medications and monitor conscious sedation during procedures to ensure patient comfort and safety. Closely monitor the patient's sedation levels, vital signs, and response to medication

  • Assists with a variety of procedures

  • Performs beside pre-cleaning of endoscopy scopes and equipment

  • Knowledge of endoscopy instruments and equipment to include use, handling, and care of endoscopy equipment

  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement principles of aseptic technique

  • Knowledge of basic infection control practices

  • Perform processing and high-level disinfection of routine and complex endoscopes or non-disposable equipment

  • Operate equipment for processing and high-level disinfection of equipment including preforming daily quality control and maintains accurate documentation

  • Assist in setting up and cleaning of procedure rooms; coordinate the proper equipment setup to ensure smooth functioning of the procedure room, assist with transportation/positioning of patients as needed

  • Ensures that the environment is clean, safe, and free from hazards to patients, staff, and visitors

  • Ensures the patient is clinically stable before discharge and provide them with comprehensive discharge instructions

  • Ensures the education of patients on their condition, treatment, and lifestyle modifications. Provide information on medications, diet changes, and self-care practice. Provide information on post procedure care, potential complications, and when to seek medical attention.

  • Put stock away in appropriate areas in a timely manner. Keep supply area neat, clean and organized. Restock procedure room supplies

  • Perform equipment inventory at required intervals. Notifies leadership of discrepancies/problems. Monitor equipment received and transferred out of department.

  • Arrange repair of equipment through clinical engineering and make arrangements for loaner equipment in conjunction with the supervisor

  • Maintain and assist with operation of endoscope towers and imaging recording systems to ensure proper documentation of procedures

  • Ensures and supports research efforts conducted within the hospital and clinics

  • Supports UI Health and Endoscopy service mission, philosophy, and goals

  • Interview prospective employees as requested

  • Collaborates with clinical instructors and clinical practice specialists to identify, promote, and positive learning experience for nursing student

  • Is an active representative of the nursing profession in internal and external forums

  • Assumes responsibility for own clinical/ professional competence and continuing education

  • Assumes responsibility for meeting personal mandatory requirements: current Illinois license as a Registered Professional Nurse, BLS, TB compliance, mandatory educational in-services, and other programs

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement data collection

  • Approaches complex interpersonal relationships in a manner which will avoid antagonism and/or unnecessary conflict to reach solution

  • Establish communication channels to resolve work related problems

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    • Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit specific certifications.
    • Current ACLS
    • Required to be on call
    • Basic computer skills with ability to become proficient in Electronic Health Record with on-the-job-training
    • Ability to work independently and as a part of the endoscopy team
    • Ability to interpret hospital and departmental policies and procedures and apply standards consistently.
    • Independently motivated self-starter and organized
    • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history required.


    Preferred Qualifications
    2 years experience with GI procedures (preferred)
    BSN (preferred)
    2 years experience in pre and post procedural recovery (preferred)
    2 years experience in pre and post procedure assessment in endoscopy (preferred)
    Experience in therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopy call, pulmonary procedures (preferred)
    Clinical knowledge and understanding of endoscopy procedures (preferred)
