Research Intern - Part-time (Memphis, TN)

This role will exist within the Intern Program and is intended to attract top performing undergraduate college students who are studying Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar disciplines. The role is meant to provide undergraduates with projects, focused on propelling Smith+Nephew forward, while also advancing the student's career. The program will provide meaningful work experiences for Interns along with team building events and social activities when available. Successful candidates for the Intern position will gain valuable experience in medical device industry which could shape career decisions and create future employment opportunities.

What will you be doing?

  • Work closely with managers and engineers to complete specifically identified Intern projects
  • Present project conclusion to senior leadership
  • Will be hands-on and spend a significant amount of time in the lab, with some data analysis and writing
  • Activities may include mechanical testing / analysis, materials research, product development, quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, regulatory activities or related tasks.

Program Length: 10-12 weeks
Location: Memphis, TN

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Must be currently matriculated at an accredited university as an undergraduate majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar discipline.
  • Experience:Some experience with mechanical testing or laboratory work is preferred.
  • Competences: Demonstrated leadership experience with effective project management experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills including technical writing, listening and speaking; ability to influence others.
  • High learning agility with the ability to analyze and synthesize data and then present it to senior leaders.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and drive project completion.
  • Independent thinking and the ability to work within a team is required.
  • Ability to assess technical issues and develop solutions utilizing an analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Requires the ability to manage tight deadlines, multiple tasks, assignment changes, periodic heavy workload, rapidly changing technology, and dynamic business growth; time management and organization skills are a must.
