Provide assistance to the Craniofacial Center's orthodontist, prosthodontist, dentist, medical artist and residents/fellows rendering dental care and maxillofacial services to patients seen in the clinic. Provide clerical and other support services in ambulatory clinic setting.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide chair side assistance such as transferring instruments, manipulating materials, and retraction of soft tissue and evacuation of fluids.
  • Assist in the application of rubber dam, prepare anesthetic syringe, prepare matrix band. Sharpen and sterilize dental instruments.
  • Instruct patients or proper oral hygiene techniques.
  • Maintain aseptic environment in patient care areas including following infection control procedures, clean and disinfect clinical surfaces, clean, disinfect and sterilize instruments and equipment.
  • Manages the inventory of prosthetic, dental and general clinic supplies and orders supplies when necessary.
  • Make and coordinate appointments for patients in other hospital clinics for consultations and treatment.
  • Make dental impressions for diagnostic purposes under supervision of dentist.
  • Prepares and takes digital, 2 dimensional pictures and film based radiographs, trains lower level staff on technique and radiation protection requirements.
  • Check dates on lab cases to make sure to coordinate with patient appointment.
  • Prepares day sheet which lists patient appointment, procedure and practitioner.
  • Prepares packet to submit for dental care authorization, monitors/works on denials or authorizations and escalates as necessary
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. Two years (24 months) of work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant II level of this series, including experience in four-handed dentistry.
    2. Current Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board, if required by the employing institution.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Preferred Bi-lingual Spanish speaking.
    • Preferred 2 years experience working in a ambulatory setting.
    • Preferred experience working with cleft and craniofacial conditions.
    • Preferred experience working with surgeons, orthodontists, maxillofacial prosthodontists.
