Why do we need you ?

The Director of R&D for gypsum product and system development is a member of Interior Product Group R&D leadership team, who leads a team of scientist and engineers, overseeing North America R&D and technical activities in support of business revenue, profitability, and growth of wall board, finishing product, and system development opportunity. The Director is closely involved in the planning of group's strategy, specific to product, technology, and system development involving multi-product-line, and the planning and execution of capital engineering projects associated with R&D investments.

In this role you will lead and manage R&D activities for gypsum wall board, finishing, and corner products, including design and engineering of new products and systems, improvements and cost reductions of existing products, develop technical competency around material and process, and provides technical support to Product Management, Sales, Operations, and Quality. You will supervise the group specific to the core product lines and leverage Saint Gobain's broad technical, design, and innovation competencies to support technical programs. Director ensures the R&D group delivers new product and process technologies in-line with the business strategic goals, timelines, and budgets. You will lead the system development leveraging full IPG product offerings and potential adjacent products from Saint-Gobain to guide product innovation, system solutions, and market differentiation for commercial market. In this role, the incumbent will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to identify system development opportunities in commercial construction market, guide system development and certification, and integrate product development initiatives with business innovation pipeline for execution. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the future of customer centric and sustainable construction solution and innovation at CertainTeed.

Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining relationships and promoting the company within industry technical organizations and developing external relationship with academic partners, strategic suppliers, and start-up companies. Working closely with CertainTeed R&D, SGR North America, other SGR Corporate R&D centers and regional gypsum R&D organizations globally to leverage resources and deliver on development projects. Build intellectual property position to ensure long-term strategic advantage. As a member of the leadership team of IPG R&D, you will drive safety mindset and lead group activities around environmental, health, and safety topics

Required Qualifications



  • A M.S. degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, or material science plus a minimum of ten years' experience in research and product development required, Ph.D. preferred
  • 10 - 15+ years' experience R&D in construction material product and process development, multi-location team management (20+), budget and expense management, IP development and portfolio
  • Additional training and experience in general management, project management, budgeting, and financial/accounting are also required.
  • An advanced degree in a technical or MBA is highly desirable.
