We are looking for an operator that has strong troubleshooting skills and can readily coordinate activities with both internal and external customers as needed. The successful operator will be confident and able to work with minimal supervision.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the quality of water throughout the distribution system meets or exceeds all regulatory requirements and the expectations of our customers. The operator must be detail oriented with excellent communication skills and available and adaptable in this evolving work environment. A willingness to cover call outs, after hours, week-ends and holidays is essential.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Must have a valid Class A public drinking water plant operator license (required by law); Consideration will be given to candidates with a Class B public drinking water plant operator license and who can obtain their Class A license within 6-months of hire;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related water systems experience;
  • Valid Driver's License.

Salary Range: Starting at $34.171 per hour (Estimated $71,075.68 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $48.138 per hour (Estimated $100,127.04 annually)

Job Purpose:

Monitor and operate the water system using the SCADA System. Works in the field collecting water quality samples, monitoring water quality, and investigating customer water quality inquiries. All activities are logged and reported to the system Supervisor.

Primary Functions:

  • Ensure the quality of water throughout the distribution system meets or exceeds all regulatory requirements and the expectations of our customers;
  • Identify problems and coordinate with Water Production Maintenance;
  • Coordinate activities with both internal and external customers as required;
  • Respond to emergency or unusual conditions with minimum supervision;
  • Perform distribution system flushing and sampling;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of, but not limited to, the following:
  • Water treatment;
  • Proper sampling techniques and procedures;
  • Water system operations;
  • Water quality monitoring methods;
  • Basic mechanical skills;
  • Familiarity with the following:
  • Department of Environmental Protection Regulations;
  • Administrative responsibilities (i.e. Timesheets, compose e-mails, create and use Excel spreadsheets);
  • Chain of Custody Documentation;
  • Using basic hand tools;
  • Equipment (i.e. Water Engine, Laptop computer in truck, Personal Protection Equipment, Water meters, Comm. Radio, Hach test equipment for chlorine analysis, Hand Tools, Hand held programmer);
  • Software Applications (i.e. SharePoint);
  • Related industry, organizational and departmental policies, practices, and procedures; legal guidelines, ordinances, and laws;

Abilities to include:

  • Ability to be detail-oriented with record keeping;
  • Takes initiative and works independently;
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems;
  • Adaptable and flexible in evolving work environments;
  • Flexible to work call outs;
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; compute rates, ratios and percentages;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and use standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.);
  • Ability to diagnose problems;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with maintenance staff using OUC radio, phone and in person.

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED;

Working Conditions:

This job involves frequent use of chemical test equipment and of a van/passenger car. This job involves occasional exposure to extreme weather, noxious fumes, chemicals, insects, heights, confined areas, excessive noise, and other stressful environments at times of emergency and non-routine condition, and on a daily basis due to the high degree of concentration required. Incumbents must be willing to work a rotating shift that will include nights and weekends along with extended hours when required including weekends, nights, and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

This job consists of constant speaking and hearing. This job consists of very frequent standing, walking, sitting, writing, and typing/CRT (attention to detail). This job consists of frequent lifting of 0-20 lbs.; bending/stooping; pushing, pulling, and/or digging; reaching over head; kneeling, crawling; and climbing (ladders, stairs, hills). Detailed inspection/reading/editing are frequently required. This job consists of occasional lifting of 21-40 lbs., and rarely lifting of more than 50 lbs.
