ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

The Waste Management and Work Control division provides the management and transportation for Brookhaven National Laboratory's (BNL) regulated waste streams and radiological material, along with managing the institutional programs for work control and conduct of operations. Dedicated to upholding the laboratory's core principles of safety, compliance, and operational excellence. Also responsible for providing safe collection, packaging and disposal of the Laboratory's hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Waste Management Department currently has a position for a Hazardous Waste Operator. This position is a bargaining unit position. The successful candidate(s) must, within thirty days following employment, become members of the Union, as a condition of employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, performs work related to the operation of the hazardous waste disposal facilities of the Waste Management Division. Includes, but not limited to, pickup, storage, packaging and bulking of hazardous waste Responsible to complete and maintain any certifications required for the operation of these facilities

  • Completing and maintaining certifications required for the operation of the Waste Management Facility

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • AAS in Chemistry, physical sciences or equivalent experience

  • Experience in working with hazardous chemicals and knowledge of associated segregations/classifications and hazard controls are required

  • Ability to operate handling equipment including but not limited to; forklifts, overhead cranes, walk-behind machines, and below-the-hook-rigging

  • Ability to work with hand and power tools

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working experience in hazardous waste management

  • HAZWOPER for waste operations

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite programs

Other information:

  • This is a Testing Designated Position. Employees in DOE-defined testing designated positions (TDPs) are subject to drug testing, including pre-placement, random, reasonable suspicion, occurrence, post-accident, and follow-up drug testing

  • On-Site Position

The Lab's placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The salary starting rate for this position is $35.74 / hour. Increases will be subject for review as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
