Purpose of the position: Northfield Public Library invites exploration, empowers people, and engages community by providing free and open access to information, resources, spaces, learning opportunities, and helpful staff. Interns will gain valuable experience and an understanding of the operations, services, organization, staffing, and resources of a public library with additional opportunity to learn about the workings of an academic library at the Gould Library at Carleton College. Interns will provide support to the library's Adult and Youth Services teams as needed working on projects such as children's programs, collection management, communications, and marketing, teen programming, and outreach.

What can an intern expect to do? You might:

  • Help people use computers, mobile devices, online resources, and library apps
  • Assist with or lead storytime and other youth programs
  • Join library staff at outreach events like our summer concerts in Way Park
  • Help people find and check out books, get a library card, and answer questions
  • Sign people up for summer reading and share information about the program and other activities
  • Work with Outreach Manager to create and deliver community programs
  • Create promotional materials and engage on social media
  • Assist people of all ages at the Library Oasis
  • Help people navigate digital resources
  • Assist with adult and youth collections, activities, and book displays
  • Join staff at outreach events with the BookBike and/or Bookmobile


Qualifications
Required:

Student at Northfield Community College Collaborative or NHS TORCH participant.

Recent NHS graduates who participated in TORCH and are currently enrolled in college are also eligible. Ages 16 and up may apply.

The Library Services Intern will gain skills in the following areas:

  • Project management and program evaluation
  • Community engagement and public programming
  • Customer Service
  • Communications and marketing


Hours:

  • 20-24 hours per week
  • Most hours will be worked between 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday through Friday and occasional weekends. Intern must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week to be eligible for childcare stipend.
  • Internship dates run during summer break, approximately late May/early June, to the end of August depending on high school/NCCC academic calendars.
