Job Overview

The Director, Benefits develops and designs health and welfare plans for Macy's, Inc. colleagues, ensuring alignment with the company's strategic goals, budget parameters, and legal and regulatory requirements. This role oversees a team responsible for communication strategy, vendor management, cost and claims analysis, reporting, and colleague engagement.

What You Will Do



  • Monitor and analyze market trends to develop competitive, cost-effective program solutions that improve health outcomes for both the company and colleagues.
  • Manage benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, voluntary benefits, health savings programs, life insurance, disability insurance, EAP, and well-being programs, covering design strategies, plan renewals, contracting, budgeting, and implementation.
  • Manage relationships with carriers, brokers, and consultants to support the administration and execution of current and potential plan offerings.
  • Ensure compliance with ERISA, state mandates, SPD and plan document requirements, and business contracts and agreements related to health and welfare plans.
  • Oversee data analytics and reporting related to claims experience, plan utilization, enrollment, and benefits site usage.
  • Enhance the colleague benefit experience by providing genuine hospitality to prospective and current participants.
  • Develop clear, concise communication strategies to educate colleagues year-round about benefit options, enrollment processes, and program updates.
  • Manage labor contract provisions related to benefit programs and processes.
  • Advise the labor team on benefit-related recommendations, ensuring alignment with company objectives and labor agreements.
  • Oversee the administration of the North Star Relief Fund 501(c)(3), a colleague-funded charity supporting fellow employees in need.
  • Lead the Benefits COE team and contribute to HR initiatives as assigned.
  • Maintain regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.


Skills You Will Need

Market Trend Analysis & Strategic Planning - Expertise in monitoring market trends and developing competitive, cost-effective benefit program solutions that enhance health outcomes for both the company and colleagues.

Benefit Program Management - Experience in managing diverse benefit programs (medical, dental, vision, voluntary benefits, etc.), including design, strategy, renewals, contracting, budgeting, and implementation.

Vendor & Relationship Management - Strong ability to manage relationships with vendors (carriers, brokers, consultants) to ensure smooth administration and execution of current and future plan offerings.

Compliance Expertise - In-depth understanding of ERISA, state mandates, and legal requirements related to health and welfare plans.

Data Analytics & Reporting - Proficiency in managing data analytics related to claims experience, plan utilization, enrollment, and benefits site usage.

Colleague Engagement & Customer Service - Skill in improving the colleague experience by providing genuine hospitality and managing effective communication about benefits.

Clear Communication - Ability to develop clear, concise communication strategies and provide education regarding benefits options, enrollment processes, and updates.

Leadership & Team Management - Demonstrated leadership skills, including managing and developing talent within the Benefits COE team and other cross-functional teams.

Budgeting & Financial Planning - Ability to develop, manage, and analyze budgets, and competency in formulating business expense plans and financial pro formas, including vendor RFPs.

Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills - Strong aptitude for identifying issues, analyzing data, and providing effective solutions to complex problems.

Project Management - Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and effective execution.

Cross-Functional Collaboration - Proven ability to work with diverse teams across the organization to accomplish defined goals.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 7-10 years of related experience.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
