Job Description

The Student Affairs department at the School of Medicine is seeking an experienced Financial Wellness Counselor. The selected candidate will provide a high level of initiative, organization, detail, and communication skills while providing high-quality work. Additionally, the selected candidate will embrace and infuse student-centered service within the higher education setting.

In efforts to provide comprehensive financial wellness services to School of Medicine students, this position also has a dotted line reporting structure to the UMKC Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.

The duties of this position include:

* Oversee financial wellness services to 800+ students in the School of Medicine from admission through graduation, and for multiple degree programs.

* Develop methods to identify students who are in need of assistance with financial issues that may adversely impact academic performance and financial and personal well-being.

* Provide students with ongoing financial guidance, counseling, and support related to financial aid, financial literacy, and debt management issues.

* Identify, support, and promote programs and resources that assist students and graduates with financial literacy, debt management, and loan repayment options including those offered by AAMC FIRST and the UMKC Financial Wellness Center, a component of UMKC Financial Aid and Scholarships office.

* Sustain a pulse on national and institutional trends, associated costs, and changes in federal regulations and their implications on the student body.

* Advocate for current and future financial aid resources and appropriate resource allocations to benefit the students, school, and institution.

* Lead the School of Medicine scholarship application, review, and awarding processes.

* Work in coordination with the UMKC Financial Aid office to understand loan options for health professional students, assist students in accepting aid, and identify solutions to individual student situations.

* Serve as the liaison to military branches for students receiving military scholarships.

* Serve on the UMKC Fee and Residency committee.

* Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration across student affairs units

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Education, Business, Finances, or related field preferred. Three years of experience working within higher education administration or financial wellness is required.

Ability to keyboard proficiently and comfortably in working within multiple data systems is necessary.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$21.28 - $24.90 per hour, commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
