Project/Unit Description

The GTRI CIPHER Lab's Secure Information Systems (SIS) Division is currently seeking a cyber security software engineer for its ROCK team. The division concentrates on the design and development of secure real-world, multi-compartment, multi-level information sharing applications. Hardware and software design methodologies are combined to deliver information exchange solutions that pass the rigorous testing required to operate on the nation's most secure networks. SIS solutions are nationally recognized within the government as state-of-the-art, affordable, secure, and scalable. While some project requirements may necessitate in-office presence, we strive to support work life balance by allowing remote work when feasible. Candidates should be prepared for a mix of on-site and remote work with specifics determined based on project needs.


Job Purpose

The Cyber Security Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests cybersecurity software in languages such as Java, C, and C++. The Cyber Security Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, and computer operating systems in order to apply engineering principles to software creation. The necessary skill areas for the Cyber Security Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, and testing software. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also creates novel cyber security technology components and software to ensure that critical systems and information are resilient to cyber exploits and attacks. The researcher also performs attendant vulnerability assessments, analysis, and software engineering and design. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also develops hardware and software prototypes, and tests those prototypes in realistic environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Apply expertise in computing systems, software structure to software planning, requirements, and development. Base software structure and design on the recognized limitations of hardware platform.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts -Create and analyze network protocols


Additional Responsibilities

  • Design and develop data structures based on business requirements.
  • Prioritize data security throughout the development process.
  • Architect and analyze database systems for optimal performance and scalability.
  • Develop and deploy cloud-ready/cloud-native database solutions.
  • Implement business requirements in an RDBMS using SQL and procedural code.
  • Maintain and enhance codebase primarily in Oracle SQL and PL/SQL.
  • Design and develop new projects and project conversions using PostgreSQL and PL/pgSQL.
  • Performance Tuning for the database and SQL queries by monitoring performance, analysis, and tuning.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues in both development and production environments.


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) with relational databases
  • Proficient in designing data storage architectures and schemas
  • Experience in writing and analyzing complex SQL queries
  • Strong technical diagnostic skills, including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution
  • Strong expertise in coding with stored procedures
  • Proficient in Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, and RDBMS architecture, with familiarity working with Pluggable Databases (PDBs).
  • Skilled in debugging SQL and PL/pgSQL
  • Proficient in database and query tuning techniques, focusing on performance and scalability
  • Familiarity with modern, distributed source code version control systems (Git)
  • Ability to quickly acquire new skills and apply them in a collaborative environment
  • Good analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Attention to detail and great communication skills
  • Based on project requirements and productivity, this position may offer some flexibility for remote work.
  • Must be able to work on-site five days a week for the first three months.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Top Secret Clearance
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL (SQL and PL/pgSQL)
  • Familiarity with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)
  • Familiarity with Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL)
  • Hands-on database administration experience in cloud environments, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure
  • In-depth knowledge of database and query tuning techniques, focusing on performance and scalability
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks like Terraform or AWS CloudFormation
  • Experience migrating complex database systems from Oracle to PostgreSQL (or similar migrations)
  • Broad knowledge of various technologies, defining components, and ensuring that the system's architecture is scalable, maintainable, and meets both functional and non-functional requirements
  • Holds DoD 8140 compliant qualification
  • AWS or Azure certification (Associate level or higher, any subject area)
  • Active security clearance
