Position Highlights Development and implementation of strategies, systems, processes, learning experiences and networks that support achievement of desired academic and career outcomes including the overall student experience. Assists students in successfully integrating into the institution's environment and thriving personally and academically.

Serves as frontline contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention. Builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic Advisors have authority to approve students' academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty. Maintains extensive industry and institutional knowledge and experience.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide advising and academic support for freshmen, transfer, and readmitted students across several campuses including Main, Online, and South to ensure successful degree completion including determining of students' stage of development and promotion of their growth by finding suitable resources, academic schedules, support services, evaluation of transfer and military credit for usage toward degree requirements, establishing realistic and attainable goals.
  • Work closely with student services staff, as a cross-college team to offer best-in-class student services that proactively address concerns of all students, particularly around academic anxieties, career planning and student engagement, and financial planning. This team will assist students with creating connections to university resources throughout their time to degree.
  • Assesses individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks
  • Evaluates use of transfer and military credit and determines whether or not degree requirements have been met
  • Supports students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals
  • Assists undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications
  • Counsels students on options to satisfy degree requirements
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in completion
  • Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring)
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan and agreement, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed
  • Interpret and communicate department, College, and University policies and procedures to students
  • Approve and certify programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements; approve and verify proposed changes to programs and assist students in their completion; determine if all requirements such as general education, major, grade point average and total units have been met
  • Using a variety of University systems, maintains student files, records and advisor notes and identifies/remedies any potential systemic issues for the student
  • Maintain student and prospect records, including the accurate and timely documentation of all pertinent student information, and update computerized information systems regarding changes to student status
  • Interpret department, College, and University policies, procedures and systems to students.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulations and policies and systems that impact students' educational options
  • Provide evidence and data based input on admission, advising, recruitment and retention
  • Provide comprehensive orientation experience to new students in a variety of formats.
  • Work with community college and military serving institution advisors in an effort to facilitate the transfer of students.
  • Coordinate with other UA advisors and Student Services staff to stay current with advising policies and procedures and provide consistent student services and advising.
  • Coordinate with faculty and advising leadership on course availability, rotations, and transfer evaluations
  • Provide general assistance and information to students, the general public and departments; confer with prospective transfer students regarding transferability of credits and admissions information
  • Routinely provides input regarding student data (such as enrollment and retention information) to college leadership
    Collect and report prospective student data
  • Correspond with prospective students regarding academic programs, admissions, transferability of coursework, veterans' benefits and financial aid
  • Contribute to the development of web, print, and other recruitment materials
  • Additional duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General
    knowledge and use of principles, theories and concepts. Is competent in all job
    functions and has general understanding of the industry practices, techniques,
    and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum
    of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising Main Campus students at the University of Arizona.
