Position Description:
Purpose
The Sheahan Lab in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin is looking for a research technician to perform experiments and assist with lab organization. The research focus of the lab is to uncover the neuronal mechanisms of itch and pain using cutting-edge neuroscience techniques. This position offers an excellent training environment for those seeking entry into graduate programs. Beyond the primary duties, there will also be opportunities for those interested in developing an independent project within the lab and to co-author publications. Primary Functions
- Design, execute, and analyze neuroscience research experiments using molecular, physiological and/or behavioral techniques in collaboration with the principal investigator
- Perform surgical procedures on mice
- Apply molecular biological approaches such as immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization
- Assist in the analysis of large datasets from multiphoton calcium imaging or behavioral assays using computational approaches
- Review laboratory methods, manuals, and scientific literature needed to perform, troubleshoot, and document lab techniques
- Summarize and communicate research findings
- Participate in lab meetings and evaluate/interpret data
- Assist in the maintenance of animal colonies (animal handling)
- Maintain inventory of lab supplies, equipment, and materials needed for lab operations
- Make lab solutions and reagents
- Collaborate with other team members and assist in training new personnel
- Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of lab space and specialized laboratory equipment
- Ensure compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations
Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
- Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, such as pipetting, making solutions, keeping a lab notebook, etc.
- Previous experience with handling rodents and willingness to work with animals is required
- Willingness to learn new techniques and troubleshoot protocols
- Ability to analyze data, think critically, and summarize data in writing as well as in group presentations
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
