Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Coordinator I (Counselor) to provide academic and career counseling services for 6th - 12th grade New Brunswick Public School (
NBPS) students under the NJ
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Program. The mission is to guide middle school and high school students on the path to college and provide tools for academic success.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Serves as the primary provider of counseling services within the GEAR UP program.
- Leads and organizes recruitment efforts and program activities on the Rutgers University - NB campus, as well as offsite at New Brunswick Public Schools and in the surrounding community.
- Provides academic and personal counseling, assistance with college applications and scholarships, mentoring, college tours, financial aid information workshops, and cultural and educational field trips.
- Schedules and coordinates the activities of mentors and tutors to ensure effective program delivery.
- Manages the GEAR UP data management system to maintain accurate records of counseling services provided to participants.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Two (2) years of experience.

Certifications/Licenses |
- A valid driver's license would be required for this position; Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- High degree of professionalism and confidentiality strict adherence to FERPA regulations when handling sensitive data.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- One year (1) of professional experience working in an urban K-12 educational setting.

Equipment Utilized |
- Use of Microsoft Office Suite, Qualtrics, Cornerstone/Marketplace, HCM, Zoom, WebEx, ROCS, Canvas and any other university learning management systems as needed.
- Use of Salesforce data management system administered through Office of Secretary of Higher Education.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- This position requires frequent travel to partner schools in New Brunswick.
- Must have flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Special Conditions |
- This position is contingent upon continued funding beyond the current grant cycle.
