Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position provides laboratory operational support to an externally funded research program in the area of nutritional biochemistry and molecular biology.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • General management and organization of the laboratory.
  • Upholds all regulations, policies, and procedures relating to health, safety and security matters in the laboratory and on campus.
  • Conducts in-laboratory safety training for new students and trainees.
  • Maintains the laboratory data management plan.
  • Orders and stocks laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Cares and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Completes routine or semi-routine molecular biology work within established work parameters for the unit; make decisions or choices following standard practices and procedures.
  • Maintains all animal care protocols in good standing; generate and maintain healthy colonies of transgenic mice for experiments using appropriate breeding strategies.
  • Conducts animal handling and procedures either independently or with other lab personnel.
  • Provides routine technical assistance to members of the laboratory to collect, sort, process, store, and access supplies, reagents, and samples.


This is a grant-funded position, continuation of employment in this position is contingent upon adequate grant funds.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a biological science, or a related scientific field.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Training or experience in mouse colony maintenance and breeding strategies is required.
  • General knowledge and application of basic biochemical and molecular biology concepts such as DNA isolation and mouse genotyping, i.e., skills normally acquired through an accumulation of higher education, work experiences and/or specific work-related training programs are required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and computer literacy skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years laboratory experience.
  • Within those years, at least 3 years experience working with experimental rodents is required.
  • Rodent handling and experience working with in vivo assays with rodents highly desirable.
  • Prior experience with Rutgers purchasing and marketplace platforms is also highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of or experience with endocrinology and molecular biology techniques in diverse mammalian tissues is desirable.
  • Ability to maintain a cell culture room and cell lines is desirable

Equipment Utilized

  • Facile use of: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Prism, Google docs and Drive, Quartzy and mouse colony management software, Rutgers purchasing and marketplace platforms.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools and supplies to perform: DNA isolation, RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, Real-Time PCR, SDS-PAGE and immunobloting, and single-cell sequencing. Knowledge of temperature-sensitive samples and conditions requiring dry ice, liquid nitrogen and storage at -80 C.
  • Knowledge of working with acids, bases, flammable agents, enzymes, chemiluminescence, fluorescence, tissue fixatives and stains.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Standing on feet for several hours at a time and wearing of personal protective equipment are required.
  • Knowledge and skills to work safely with hazardous materials are required.
  • The ability to lift at least 20 pounds are required.
