History Advisor and Humanities Coordinator - Dietrich College

The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated collaborator and program builder to join our academic advising team. The successful hire will be responsible for providing holistic academic advising to students pursuing a major or minor in the History Department and helping to implement strategic initiatives related to the humanities at Carnegie Mellon, including raising the profile of Dietrich College's humanities programs, building a community of humanities students, faculty, and staff, and increasing the sense of belonging among students studying the humanities throughout Dietrich College.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team setting. The position will report directly to Dietrich College's Director of Advising and will collaborate closely with faculty and staff in the History Department. The role will also partner with advisors and faculty in the other humanities departments as well as the first year advising team and other campus partners to develop opportunities that will help humanities students thrive at CMU. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about the humanities and dedicated to supporting students.

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides high quality, personalized, one-on-one holistic advising to students majoring or minoring in programs offered by the Department of History

  • Assists advisees in setting personal and professional development goals and identifying and leveraging resources on and off campus to make the most of their undergraduate career.

  • Encourages students to explore a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities, both internally to CMU and externally, that include research, internships, study abroad, community engagement, and more.

  • Manages complex student cases and engages with multiple student affairs offices as needed for students in crisis or with complex questions. Works closely with college leadership on student cases that are unique.

  • Performs administrative tasks related to advising including student record-keeping, note-taking, attendance at college and university meetings, and service on college and university committees.

  • Collaborates with other humanities departments, programs, and campus partners to develop academic, career, and social programming for humanities majors

  • Works with Director of Advising, first year advising team, and key campus stakeholders to increase the number of declared majors and minors in humanities departments

  • Serves as the primary liaison for the Humanities at college and university Admissions events and collaborates with Humanities departments to help improve their recruitment and increase their yield of prospective and admitted students

  • Facilitates meaningful connections for humanities students by developing relevant programming, leveraging existing campus resources, and referring students to appropriate faculty and campus partners

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred.

  • 1-3 years of experience in student-facing higher education roles required

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
