Technical Professional - Multifunctional Equipment Integration

Overview:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Technical Professional position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle performance.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support research staff in conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research related to mass and energy conversion systems including: (1) Water heating technologies; (2) Dehumidification systems (3) Waste heat recovery systems; (4) Advanced vapor compression and power generation systems.
  • Develop novel designs for mass exchangers, conduct experimental campaigns, perform thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyze results, and prepare technical documents and research publications.
  • Interact and collaborate with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An MSin chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science/engineering, energy or environmental science, or a related field with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Research and development experience (including academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred, especially in the above-mentioned relevant fields.
  • A background (or other direct experience) in mass and energy conversion systems (such as system design, analytical modeling, numerical modeling, experimental design, instrumentation and data acquisition).
  • Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a)membranes, (b)gas-liquid or gas-solid sorption processes, (c)regeneration systems and integration of waste heat resources, (d) process modeling and control systems.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership.
  • A publication and/or patent record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science/engineering, energy and environmental science or related field.
  • The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events.
  • Experience with building equipment such as electric or gas fired air and water heaters, dehumidification systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with system integration platforms is also preferred.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
