Description

The primary function of this position is to provide direct patient care and support to the SIU Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic patients and faculty. Time is spent assisting providers with face to face patient contact in the clinic and coordination of external services and follow up as needed.


Examples of Duties

Clinical and Clerical Support 100%

1.Order supplies\laundry and manage inventories

2. Stock and rotates supplies

3. Clean rooms and furniture per the SIU Healthcare Clinic's cleaning and disinfection policy

4. Calibrates and performs routine maintenance and repair of ophthalmic equipment and instruments.

5. Completes sterilization of instruments as needed per SIU policy/procedure and keeps necessary logs.

6.Works closely with reception staff in regards to scheduling, mailing of letters, and maintaining an efficient workflow.

7. Room patients and obtains vital signs as needed.

8. Complete basic medical history and chief complaint from patients including past ocular, medical, family and social history utilizing the organizations electronic medical record system.

9. Perform basic diagnostic skills and testing, which may include manual/auto lensometry, VEP testing, pachymetry, keratometry, visual fields, contact lens instruction, tonometry and fundus photography.

10. Perform a variety of visual acuity testing, pupillary evaluation and diagnostic tests. Administer eye medications and irrigating solutions under the supervision of the Ophthalmologist.

11. Assists in the coordination of external services with hospitals and participating specialists and communicating scheduling and instructions to the patients.

12. Performs other job duties assigned.


Qualifications

  1. Six (6) months of work experience performing basic ophthalmology or optometry.
