Job Summary

To manage internal and external environmental affairs for the corporation in a manner which promotes regulatory compliance, limits regulatory burdens, maximizes operational flexibility, and strives for economical environmental solutions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide regulatory guidance and support to the field operations with respect to Federal, State and Local environmental laws and regulations; this includes a proactive effort to track regulatory developments which could have an impact on the corporation.
  • Provide environmental engineering, technical, and administrative support to the field in an effort to assure regulatory compliance, resolve compliance related issues, and find technological improvements which provide an economic benefit to the corporation.
  • Provide environmental engineering, technical, and administrative support to the field operations related to acquiring, maintaining, and renewing environmental permits and plans.
  • Manage remediation/closure efforts as they relate to the company's historic use of storage tanks, lagoons, and property. This includes administrative and technical oversight of these activities and the management of environmental consultants.
  • Provide capital project development and management support, as needed, in the areas of wastewater treatment, odor abatement, emission controls, and other related projects working closely with, and in support of, Corporate Engineering Department.

Work Environment - Interaction and communications with the Director of Environmental Affairs take place on an as needed basis. Communications with field management is frequent and on an as needed basis. The position acts primarily as a support function to the field. The focus of the function is regulatory guidance and technical support. Certain decisions are made independent of the Director.

Business Environment -The position requires managing information and tasks of a very technical and complex nature. The position demands that the incumbent have or develop a strong familiarity with all collection, transport, and processing facets of the business. The incumbent is also required to manage and work across all the functional areas of the corporation. Decisions and guidance from the function can have very significant economic impacts on operating budgets and operational goals and objectives. The position is very visible both internally and externally adding to the significance of the incumbent's role in the corporation.

Internal and External Relationships - Internally the incumbent will interact and communicate with corporate management and their respective departments, and with Field VP's, General Managers, District Managers, and Plant Managers; externally incumbent will interact and communicate with Environmental and Engineering Consultants and Contractors, Service Providers, and Regulatory Agencies.

Organizational Framework - The incumbent will report to the Director of Environmental Affairs, West. The incumbent will be responsible for some oversight of the Environmental Affairs Coordinator and Environmental Affairs Administrator work products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or Applied Science degree in engineering or environmentally related field.
  • Environmental regulatory experience with air, water, wastewater, waste, and remediation issues.
  • Familiarity with air and water quality permitting, air pollution control equipment design and operation, wastewater treatment system design and operation, land application of waste streams, remediation technologies, soil and ground water monitoring, field auditing, environmental legal perspectives, and environmental due diligence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chemical, Civil, or Agricultural engineering degree with graduate work in environmental engineering or science preferred.
  • Five to ten years of experience in an environmental discipline and work experience in the food processing industry.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to act independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and disciplines simultaneously.
  • Work well with all levels of the corporation.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, bend, and kneel Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs.
  • Long periods spent sitting at desk in front of computer screen.
  • Regularly required reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment

  • Job functions will be carried out in an office environment.
  • Position requires 20% - 30% travel.
