HIRING SALARY RANGE: $59,311 - $61,874

Description of Duties:

The Division is designed to provide students with the support and resources necessary to adjust to life at NCSSM, to embrace and overcome challenges inside and outside of the classrooms and to thrive at NCSSM beyond. NCSSM Campus Safety assists with that goal by providing safety management on campus. NCSSM Campus Safety has staff on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the calendar year. The department manages safety operations for NCSSM students, visitors, faculty and staff. The department includes full time campus resource officers. In addition, the department collaborates with the Durham Police Department to provide uniformed police presence on campus. The department relies on systems (ex: card access, closed circuit videos, alert systems, sign out websites) to provide services to the NCSSM community. All of these systems require regular monitoring and updates.

The purpose of this position is to support the school and department's safety efforts. Specifically, providing assistance for key operations within the department such as supervision of staff, emergency response/preparedness, training for NCSSM community members, among other duties.

In addition, this position coordinates protection of minor policies, protocols, training, and compliance activities aimed at ensuring that minors who participate in University Programs, or who participate in programs operated by third parties on NCSSM campuses are provided a safe and secure environment.

The position reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety for NCSSM Durham and works closely with the Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Chief Campus Officer for the NCSSM Durham campus.

This position is mandatory/essential and is required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters and other emergency conditions, and during campus closings.

Selected candidates must have the ability to achieve active CPR certification within the first 6 months of employment. First Aid and First Responder certs are preferred.

Selected candidates must have or be able to obtain within six months a valid driver's license in good standing. Must be insurable with no serious driving-related convictions.

This position is primarily an in-person position with limited options for remote work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and supervision

? Provide leadership and operational support for the Director of Campus Safety and the larger department.

? Supervise a team of campus resource officers.

? Serve as primary Campus Safety administrator in the absence of the Director of Campus Safety.

? Collaborate with Durham Police Department to provide police officer coverage to NCSSM Durham. Work with Director of Campus Safety and Durham Police Liaison on schedules, pool of officers available, training, and knowledge of NCSSM practices/procedures.

? Provide after-hours and weekend support (as needed) for campus resource officers). Respond as needed to active incidents/threats impacting NCSSM Durham. Examples include access control, camera training, and emergency preparedness.

? Attend UNC System campus safety meetings/training as designated by the Director of Campus Safety.

? Participate as needed in student conduct processes including the student charge committee, disciplinary hearings, etc.

Program Coordination, Training, and Communication

? Coordinate campus safety drills during the year (ex: tornado, evacuation, lockdown, and fire safety drills.

? Assist with updating and maintaining emergency response information (ex: Critical Incident Bags, megaphones, supplies, rosters, etc.)

? Provide campus wide training on emergency procedures to staff and students including monthly onboarding sessions.

? Update campus safety websites (Protection of Minors, Emergency Response, Fire Safety). Support other tech systems that the department uses (ex: card access)

? Provide training on emergency equipment to appropriate student life staff.

? Serve on Campus Safety Assessment teams including our Behavioral Threat Assessment Team, Campus Emergency Response Team.

? Assist with coordinating the training and certifications for Campus Safety employees.

? Update and coordinate vehicle reservation system for NCSSM Durham.

? Assist with vehicle safety training for NCSSM employees.

? Assist with monitoring the condition of NCSSM Durham vehicles (ex: mileage logs, battery, fluids, fuel receipts).

? Coordinate maintenance and repair as needed/directed by the Director of Campus Safety.

? Responsible for maintaining residential key boxes and creating student and employee key packets.

Ability to coordinate and manage communication efforts conveying difficult, crucial, and/or controversial decisions.

  • Leadership: Ability to provide program/project leadership in planning and organizing the work of others. Ability to work collaboratively to manage issues. Ability to evaluate and recommend resource needs. Ability to consult with senior level decision-makers on an on-going basis. Maintain confidentiality at all times.


Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience working in campus safety/public safety in a residential school setting (high school and/or college) is strongly preferred. This includes the following areas:

    • Development/implementation/enforcement of campus safety procedures

    • Knowledge of student conduct processes and procedures

    • Experience training campus safety team members and employees on campus safety procedures

    • Crisis Management and response

  • Experience as a supervisor whose responsibilities include completing performance evaluations and participating in the disciplinary process for subordinates.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with technology and other resources to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of practices and procedures.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the roles that Student Life departments play in supporting the academic and student development of students attending a residential high school. (ex: Student Services, Housing/Residence Life, Counseling Services)

  • Ability to work with and effectively communicate with students, families, faculty, staff, and school leadership.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Vacation and Personal Leave: EHRA Exempt Professional Staff (EPS) receive 26 days per year. Leave is pro-rated for part-time and less than 12 month employees. Leave is earned monthly.

Sick Leave: 12 days per year. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated.

Additional Leave: Family Medical Leave (FMLA), Paid Parental Leave (PPL), Civil Leave, Personal Observance Day, Extended Illness, Short/Long Term Disability, Family Illness Leave, Military Leave, Community Service Leave, Voluntary Shared Leave and Leave Without Pay.

Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the State Health Plan (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.

Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).

Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions.

Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option - 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
