Job Summary
The University of California, Davis Fire Department (UCDFD) is seeking a Contract EMT Lead Skills Instructor to support its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) EMT Program. This position plays a critical role in the delivery of high-quality skills labs, ensuring students achieve their learning objectives and the program operates efficiently. The Contract EMT Lead Skills Instructor is responsible for overseeing skills lab activities, coordinating with instructors and students, and managing logistics to ensure smooth daily operations. In collaboration with the EMT Program Director, the Contract EMT Lead Skills Instructor facilitates the planning and execution of lab sessions, including setting up and maintaining equipment, monitoring instructor and student performance, and addressing operational challenges. This position ensures alignment with program policies and objectives, supports student success through mentorship, and maintains accurate daily skill lab reports of student progress and lab operations. The role requires a professional who is organized, detail-oriented, and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing program needs. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as the Contract EMT Lead Skills Instructor works closely with program staff, instructors, and students to foster a productive and inclusive learning environment. Key Responsibilities: Oversee daily operations of skills labs, ensuring smooth execution and adherence to objectives. Coordinate with instructors and students to maintain an effective and professional learning environment. Manage equipment setup, maintenance, inventory, and logistical needs for lab sessions. Serve as the primary point of contact for student and instructor questions, issues, or concerns during skill labs. Conduct pre-lab briefings, delegate tasks, and ensure instructors understand daily objectives and expectations. Monitor student progress, provide guidance, and report concerns to the Program Director. Participate in planning meetings as needed to address lab scheduling, equipment readiness, and program needs. This is a variable-hour, hourly contract position requiring flexibility, as weekly hours will vary based on program demands. The position is limited to 0.43 FTE or a maximum of 894 hours annually. Schedule: Skills Labs: EMT Skills Labs are typically divided into two sections: Saturdays and Sundays (0700-1800) during Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters, and Fridays and Saturdays (0700-1800) during the Summer Quarter. The Lead Skills Instructor will be assigned to one or both sections for the quarter and must be available for all scheduled lab sessions, with substitutions arranged in advance if necessary. Additional Classes: Opportunities to teach CPR and Stop the Bleed classes during weekdays and evenings may be available, pending contractual hours and prior approval. Planning Meetings: Meetings with the Program Director and supervisor will be scheduled as needed during weekdays. The ideal candidate is an energetic, self-motivated professional who demonstrates: Exceptional organizational and communication skills (verbal, written, and non-verbal). Strong collaboration, analytical and problem-solving skills to manage real-time challenges. Familiarity with EMS education standards, hands-on instruction techniques, and equipment maintenance. - National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor I certification or education and experience with at least forty (40) hours of documented teaching methodology instruction in areas related to methods, materials, and evaluation of instruction.
- Current California certification or licensure as an EMT-Paramedic, Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), or Medical Doctor (MD) is required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Have at least two (2) years of academic or clinical experience in the practice of emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years.
- Ability to deliver hands-on skills instruction effectively in classroom environments, assess student learning and performance, and facilitate successful student outcomes aligned with program objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
- An Associate's degree or higher.
- Experience with learning management systems (LMS), simulation-based training tools, and student management platforms to enhance educational delivery and student engagement.
- Proven experience in professional team oversite, including creating schedules, managing coordination, assigning work, monitoring progress, and producing reports.
- Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the state of California, and demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theories, competency-based education principles, and effective facilitation techniques.
- Ability to work independently as a self-starter while effectively collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including hospital partners, medical directors, and program leadership.
- Ability to adapt to changing program needs in a positive, professional, and productive manner. Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment that meets the needs of diverse student populations and healthcare settings.
- Skill to perform logistical needs such as inventory, clean, and restock EMS equipment and gear bags needed for EMS classes.
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.

Department Overview The Contract EMT Lead Skills Instructor operates under the general direction of the UCDFD EMS Division Head, EMT Program Director, and EMS Captain. This position works closely with other EMS Division staff and instructors to coordinate and manage the skills lab components of the EMT Program. The incumbent oversees the daily operations of EMT skills labs, ensuring that sessions run smoothly, objectives are met, and students receive high-quality hands-on training. Responsibilities include managing lab logistics, such as equipment setup, maintenance, and inventory, as well as providing guidance and support to both students and instructors during lab sessions. In addition to overseeing lab activities, the Lead Skills Instructor is responsible for teaching an assigned skills station during each lab day, ensuring students gain the necessary competencies and receive constructive feedback. The Lead Skills Instructor serves as the primary point of contact during skills labs, addressing questions and concerns in real time, monitoring student progress, and ensuring adherence to program policies. The incumbent conducts pre-lab briefings, delegates tasks, assigns group rotations, and ensures all instructors understand the daily objectives and expectations. Outside of lab days, the incumbent collaborates with the EMT Program Director to prepare resources for upcoming sessions, maintain accurate student records, and align class objectives with program standards. The Lead Skills Instructor also performs regular equipment inspections, manages inventory through established systems, and communicates equipment needs to the Program Director. This position involves a mix of administrative and instructional responsibilities, requiring frequent interaction with instructors, students, and guest presenters. The incumbent ensures that all skills labs are executed in a manner consistent with program guidelines and that any issues or challenges are promptly reported to the Program Director or EMS Captain. Work Environment UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Must possess the physical ability to present to groups and perform hands-on skills demonstrations in classroom and outdoor settings, including enduring various weather conditions and maintaining focus in dynamic or distracting environments. Must possess stamina, strength, agility, power, flexibility, coordination, and balance to perform training and instructional duties. A valid California Driver's License is required. Work schedules will vary and include nights, weekends, and variable hours to support instruction, and classes held outside of standard business hours. The incumbent is responsible for adhering to all safety guidelines, protocols, and processes while performing job duties in various environments, including classrooms, outdoors, and other settings typical in Emergency Medical Services. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which requires following basic safety precautions. The work involves light exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
