About the Job

This Senior Fellow position has a concurrent title of Edison W. Spencer Chair in Technology Management (Spencer Chair) and is part of the senior leadership team in the Technological Leadership Institute. This is a 100% time, 12-month, non-tenured, academic professional (P&A) appointment that is annually renewable dependent upon performance and the availability of funding.

The Spencer Chair is responsible for developing strategic partnerships with internal partners within the University including the College of Science & Engineering and external industry partners to promote academic and non-academic programs. This position will work with partners to identify continuing education needs and develop innovative, customized learning experiences to meet those needs. The position is also expected to be a thought leader and to pursue scholarship in their area(s) of expertise.

Teaching & Capstones 45%

  • Assigned a minimum of 8 graduate credits (or equivalent) per year in TLI's programs to include capstones, teaching, short courses, or guest lecturers.
  • Course teaching responsibilities:
  • Update course syllabus and reading list every term to reflect feedback from previous classes and the latest thinking in the field being covered.
  • Make sure the readings are easily available to students and that any materials used in class are posted on the course site.
  • Design classroom teaching to engage and inspire students; making sure the key lessons of the course are well understood.
  • Design class discussion opportunities and break-out exercises to give students experience in the key concepts.
  • Invite guest lecturers as desirable to best achieve course goals.
  • Develop class assignments and quizzes, evaluate the student responses, and provide individual written and/or verbal feedback to every student.
  • Have regular office hours, and other opportunities to talk with students to help them succeed.
  • Evaluate student performance through grades, plus written feedback.
  • Serve as capstone advisor on graduate student capstones, as needed.
  • Meet periodically with students during the year to discuss progress.
  • Attend final capstone presentations.
  • Forward evaluation and recommendation to capstone committee chair.
  • Contribute to the teaching and coordination of short courses for industry partners as necessary.

Outreach, advocacy, partnerships, & recruiting 45%

  • Cultivate connections and opportunities for collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. Develop relationships with external partners in technology-intensive industries to identify continuing education needs and develop innovative learning experiences to meet those needs. These may be in the form of public or company-sponsored courses to reskill or upskill technical professionals. Will participate in the design, implementation and delivery, and evaluation of programs.
  • Collaborate with TLI academic and operational staff to develop an annual strategic plan for outreach and recruitment to increase visibility of TLI programs including academic and non-academic programs.
  • Collaborate with CSE and UMN partners to identify opportunities for recruiting and outreach.
  • Identify opportunities for the TLI Advisory Board to promote TLI programs and facilitate engagement.
  • Manage TLI alumni relationships and organize events and opportunities for engagement and networking.

Thought Leadership, Research, and Service - 10%

  • Assist with TLI's strategic planning and implementation efforts.
  • Attend TLI academic unit meetings, staff meetings, Advisory Board meetings, etc. and serve on subcommittees and project teams, as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge expertise in one or more fields of study related to TLI's technological leadership mission or one of its program offerings.
  • Contribute scholarship to TLI-related fields of study through:
  • Writing whitepapers, articles and books for publication.
  • Organizing and/or presenting at conferences.
  • Pursuing research opportunities and leading and participating in research projects
  • Engage in community-service activities aimed at promoting TLI's technological leadership mission, sharing the organizational knowledge and expertise, and assisting with the translation of knowledge into practice.
Qualifications

Required:

  • A Master's degree in an engineering, science, business or management discipline
  • A minimum 15 years of technical, managerial, and/or senior leadership experience
  • Prior college-level teaching or professional training and development experience in a leadership, technical, or management discipline.
  • Industry experience training and/or developing technical or scientific professionals.

Preferred:

  • Ph.D. degree in an engineering, science, or business discipline'
  • Prior lecturer or guest lecturer in TLI Management of Technology degree program.

The Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) is an interdisciplinary center at the University of Minnesota established in 1987 by an endowment from the Honeywell Foundation. The Institute is part of the College of Science and Engineering, which is ranked among the top engineering and science schools in the country.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $170,000 - $175,000 depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
