What You'll Be Doing:

  • Implements speech/language programs developed by the speech-language pathologist for specified students, as well as other instructional aspects of individualized educational programs designed by certificated staff for designated special education student(s).
  • Instruct students, individually or in small groups, speech/language programs and other subjects Maintains accurate record-keeping for daily sessions; compiles, reviews, and records student assignments and progress; performs consistent follow-through activities with designated special education student(s).
  • Instructs student(s) in self-care activities such as reinforcing communication skills, daily living skills, appropriate social skills, and/or mobility skills as determined collaboratively by the speech-language pathologist and special education teacher.
  • Uses adaptive technology aids/equipment to support communication and academic activities in the classroom and other designated settings within the school and community as appropriate.
    Adapts and prepares a variety of designated classroom materials and implements programming to meet the needs of special education students.
  • Monitors student progress and behavior; participates in regular conferences with the speech-language pathologist and special education teacher in order to maintain communication with school and program staff and correct implementation of program.
  • Assists students in entering/leaving building, moving between classes, and boarding busses; determines appropriate level of assistance. Assists certificated staff with testing students, recording scores, and maintaining related files.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other assigned meetings; participates in professional development activities, as needed or assigned.
  • Serves as member of the instructional team of the building and district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.



What You Need to Bring to the Table:

  • Completion of Bachelors of Science in communication or equivalent training and one year of experience working with moderate or severely disabled children, preferably in a classroom setting; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Knowledge of effective methods and techniques for working with moderate and severely disabled students participating in special education programs.
  • Knowledge of effective communication and instructional methods for targeted special education students.
  • Knowledge of common communication impairments, autism, and other disabilities and their functional implications in the educational setting.
  • Ability to work independently, and to independently learn operations, procedures, processes, and use of equipment, especially augmentative communication systems and computers.
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters.
  • Ability to keep work organized and carry out duties effectively and efficiently, including the ability to appropriately set priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, with courtesy and respect.
  • Ability to interact positively with others in a work environment, including the ability to adapt to new or different conditions.
  • Ability to be dependable, including good habits in attendance and punctuality.
