The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Division of Gynecologic Specialty Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Columbia University Medical Center is comprised of 11 fellowship-trained physicians, 4 fellows, and 3 nurse practitioners practicing in two unique sections: Complex Benign Gynecology/Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) and Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.

We provide comprehensive gynecologic care, exploring different diagnostic and treatment options to treat and manage Gynecologic and Urogynecology problems, from fibroids and endometriosis to prolapse and incontinence.

Our providers work with each patient to design an individualized care management plan, from routine testing to the most advanced diagnosis and treatment for women of all ages. We are looking for a Physician Assistant to join our dynamic team, providing outstanding care for our patients.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Coordinator/Physician Assistant will report to both the Division Chief and the Division Administrator of Gynecologic Specialty Surgery. The incumbent will be responsible for providing GYN care services in the office; including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients.

Administrative/Operations



  • Incumbent will work with the Urogynecology and MIGS physicians in the Division of Gynecologic Specialty Surgery to provide high quality, comprehensive patient care.
  • Develop and see independent patient panels.
  • Perform IUD placements, endometrial biopsies, urodynamic testing, pessary maintenance visits, including counseling sessions, vaginal dilator training, and medical management of common gynecologic and urogynecologic disorders.
  • Perform post-operative voiding trials, bladder instillations, and clean intermittent catheterization/catheter teaching.
  • Conduct pre-operative counseling and post-op visits in collaboration with individual Urogynecology and MIGS physicians.
  • Assists in development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care and professional practice in collaboration with members of the health care team and in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory agency requirements.


  • Tracks abnormal lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow-up as ordered by the physician in the patient's plan of care.


  • The incumbent will perform and document comprehensive surgical, medical and psychosocial health histories, examinations (document pertinent positive and negative findings), and initiate/maintain a problem/medication list.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies including but not limited to laboratory and imaging studies, diagnostic impression, and/or form a differential based on the subjective and objective data obtained.
  • The incumbent will perform preoperative patient interviews and assessments including pre-op instructions, postoperative patient care and instructions, prepare and administer prescribed medications and treatment in accordance with standards.
  • Formulate a goal-directed plan that includes health maintenance, anticipatory guidance and appropriate medical and nursing interventions according to the established protocols.


  • Assist with triaging patient phone calls and processing prescription request, signing off on all normal labs, reviewing all labs and collaborating with physicians in contacting patients with abnormal results and ensuring appropriate follow up is scheduled and handled appropriately.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of division initiatives including education programs, QA and CQI.


  • Comply with all hospital, department and division policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective organization and interpersonal skills to create a team environment and an efficient work flow.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Serve as a mentor and resource to others.

  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA requirements at all times.
  • Keep current on all organizational and practice policies (e.g., infection control, HIPAA), goals, initiatives, and required trainings
  • Ensure that University and Department policies and procedures are followed.
  • Successfully complete all required university, hospital, and department trainings.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested within professional scope of practice/training/education.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus five years of related experience.


  • Physician Assistants: PA license in NYS and Board Certification; Current or Eligible for NYS DEA License.
  • Physician Assistants: Degree from Accredited AMA CAHEA Approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of peers, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Must have highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to deescalate stressful situations.
  • Must be an engaged and positive team member demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations including helping peers adapt to new situations.


Preferred Qualifications



  • 2 years outpatient OB/GYN clinical experience.
  • Surgical outpatient clinical experience.
