Job Summary

Under direct supervision, responsible for performing a variety of experiments involving, but not limited to: basic gene cloning and subcloning, RT-PCR, Xenopus oocyte harvesting and injecting, two-electrode voltage clamping electrophysiology studies, and assisting in anesthesia or analgesia studies in animals. Perform computer data collection and tabulation, record keeping in a laboratory notebook, and providing weekly progress updates to the principal investigator. Duties will also include tracking lab inventory and notifying the PI of ordering needs; maintenance of lab equipment, maintenance and propagation of nucleic acid plasmid stocks, preparation of perfusion solutions; updating lab protocols; and assisting in the full compliance of the laboratory with all University personnel, safety, and animal care policies. Work in collaboration, as needed, with students and fellows working in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology, Cellular Physiology or Pharmacology or related discipline.
  • Experience keeping thorough records of experimental results.
  • Familiarity with basic cloning and RNA synthesis techniques.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects and accept directions when given.
  • Ability to communicate progress and problems to Principal Investigator.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cell electrophysiology techniques and/or gas chromatography. Experience with animal surgery and anesthesia.

Department Overview

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences is the largest academic Department in the School of Veterinary Medicine, with ~ 60 Faculty (55 Academic Senate and 4 Federation), 22 Emerti faculty, 15 federation researchers and instructors, 6 visiting scholars, 30 post-docs, graduates and undergraduates student personnel, 15 career staff and contract staff personnel and numerous faculty collaborators across campus. The Department has annual expenditures totaling in excess of $14M annually.This position serves as a member and is responsible for supervision of the business office team providing financial administration and analysis on expenditures totaling over $6 million for contract and grants, purchasing, accounts payable, travel & entertainment, and recharge unit administration in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences and collaborative units across campus.
