$124,300.00 - $205,000.00

Job Description Summary:

Responsible for directing key areas of HomeStreet Bank's (the "Company") Accounting Operations, with specific focus on operational oversight for Financial Analysis & Operations, Tax, Payroll Accounting, Payroll Processing and Accounts Payable functions. In addition, leading key processes across all areas of Accounting Operations such as technical accounting, close management, process improvements, implementation of best practices, system implementations, ensuring deadlines are achieved, and assisting with managing the staff and Accounting Department. Partner closely with other groups, such as, FP&A, Treasury, Human Resources, Legal to support Company strategic initiatives. Assist Controller directing the financial affairs of the Company, including but not limited to, acquisitions and timely and accurate financial reporting.

Maintain accuracy of the Company's financial information through oversight of the general ledger, effective processing of accounting close cycles, management of SOX internal controls, timely and accurate financial reporting, and analysis for areas of responsibility. Contribute to the efficiency of the Accounting Operations Department by participating in cross training, sharing job responsibilities, and serving as position backup for direct reports and Controller. Develop and lead a high performing team of managers and staff through mentoring, goal setting, training, motivating, and rewarding strong performance.

Job Details:

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, for both internal and external purposes, and oversee the financial close processes including review of variance analysis, trend analysis and financial highlights and the monthly close package.
  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for areas of responsibility. Analyze various financial transactions, including complex adjusting and month end entries for high-risk areas such as purchase accounting, divestures of assets (or portions of the Company), tax provision, equity and stock awards, lease restructuring and impairment, among others.
  • Monitor account reconciliation process for compliance with policies and Aged Items Report to ensure amounts are clearing timely and accurately or written off.
  • Collaborate with other Accounting Operations managers to stay current on emerging accounting standards and SEC reporting requirements and ensure proper application in the Company's operations and reporting process. Provide input and make recommendations in implementing new accounting standards and new business initiatives.
  • Provide technical accounting support and research to Accounting Operations and ensure compliance with US GAAP. Collaborate with other mangers to support the business areas of the Company in evaluating financial accounting impacts of proposed transactions, new products, and services.
  • Maintain accounting and desktop procedures for responsible areas and applications and oversee that desktop procedures are maintained for staff to ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures, SOX, and regulatory requirements.
  • Re-engineer existing processes to improve efficiencies and enhance controls. Incorporate new accounting standards into Accounting Operations policies, procedures and subledger systems where appropriate.
  • Oversee record retention (Record Custodian or designate) requirements for Accounting Operations as well as annual procedures certification, business resumption planning and related annual testing.
  • Draft or review and update accounting memos for significant transactions during the quarter. Ensure documentation is sufficient for audit purposes with the Controller.
  • Oversee the integrity of the PeopleSoft General Ledger system and other accounting applications such as Blackline and Concur.
  • Lead or provide support in enterprise-wide initiatives and assist in other special projects, including system upgrades for Accounting Department, merger and acquisition related activities, and new products.
  • Assume a significant role interacting with the Company's independent and internal auditors and examiners in their quarterly and annual reviews and audits, coordinating accounting related inquiries and requests.
  • Contribute to the efficiency of the Accounting Operations Department by participating in cross training, sharing job responsibilities, and serving as position backup for direct reports and Controller.
  • Oversee Request for Information and Prepared by Client schedules for areas of responsibility to ensure they are prepared accurately, properly reviewed and submitted timely.
  • Develop and hone strong working relationships with constituents in Accounting and stakeholders in Corporate Support and business lines of the Company.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written forms across all levels of the organization. Ensure there is understanding of technical topics by staff, peers, and constituents throughout the Company.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to all internal and external constituents. Become a trusted accounting advisor.
  • Key contributor in maintaining the Company's SOX program and ownership of key controls.
  • Work collaboratively with all business partners to facilitate execution of the Company's Strategic Plan.
  • Develop staff through performance management, goal setting, training, mentoring, and rewarding strong performance. Build a highly effective team with in-depth knowledge for their responsible areas capable of providing excellent customer service and who act as partners or resources to other groups within the Company. Ensure knowledge depth of each function by extensive cross-training.
  • Assist Controller directing the financial affairs of the Company and perform other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 12 years of related work experience, including management experience, some public accounting and/or experience with financial institutions preferred.
  • Similar accounting leadership role in a small to mid-sized company preferred.
  • Proven experience leading a high performing team, applying technical and operational accounting knowledge, implementing process improvements with technology and other tools, and maintaining an efficiency, best practices mindset highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to relate and communicate effectively across all levels of staff inside and outside the department.
  • Hands-on, energetic, team player with proven ability to adapt quickly in a changing environment and facilitate change, multitask effectively, and work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize projects, quickly determine the requirements to accomplish them, and analyze the processes to figure out how to simplify, automate, and improve them for increased efficiency.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with ease. Deadline driven and able to prioritize to complete deliverables on time.
  • Must possess sound judgment, solid decision-making ability, and a high level of problem solving and analytical ability.
  • Strategic mindset and detail oriented; ability to pivot back and forth when needed.
  • Strong administrative skills and highly organized.
  • CPA required, license preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Proficient with technology and tools: General Ledger and MS Office, advanced Excel skills preferred, and willingness to learn other software as needed.

  • Must be able to sit for many hours each day.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone and possess dexterity to include filing documents, reaching and bending.
  • May be required to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to speak English and express ideas and have difficult conversations in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to listen and comprehend speech.
  • Ability to problem solve, make decisions, interpret data and information, read, write and organize information in an orderly manner.
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally as needed.

  • Normal business office environment with the potential for hybrid options as agreed upon with hiring manager.
