Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.17 to $31.82/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $24.11 to $31.82/hr.
Work Location: Valentine Reserve and SNARL, Mammoth Lakes, CA
Working Days and Hours: Generally, M-F, 9-5. Includes night and weekend work.

Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under general supervision of the Reserve Director, this position is responsible for on-site operations and safety at Valentine Reserve, carries out routine maintenance and repair of facilities, utilities, vehicles and equipment. Assumes primary responsibility for resource management tasks at Valentine Reserve. Assumes primary responsibility for custodial tasks. Maintains, improves, and provides custodial care for the physical plant and supporting systems, vehicles, fences, and grounds of the Valentine Reserve. Assists the Reserve Director as needed with other tasks including interacting with researchers, students, community members using the Reserve as well as Reserve neighbors, donors and other stakeholders of the facility. In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibilities delegated by the Director. Oversees contracted maintenance services (construction, CalFire crews). Must be available outside of normal working hours. Seasonal position is 100% from April 15 to October 15, with possible extension into winter months. There is a possibility of onsite housing. Qualifications: Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- 1-3 years' Experience in the performance of semiskilled maintenance/mechanical work including utilities (water and septic systems), basic building repair, fence construction, preparing grounds for fire safety inspections and basic vehicle operation and maintenance (trucks, ATV's, excavators and heavy equipment)
- One year experience as a Building Maintenance Worker, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled building maintenance work.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- The position is seasonal from April 15 to October 15 (100%). Possibility of extension into the winter months. Possibility of onsite housing at Valentine Reserve.
- Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 30% Maintenance and Improvement of Facilities - Under general supervision of Reserve Director, is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and general improvement of field station infrastructure and facilities including roads, trails, fences, signs, utilities, buildings and water distribution systems. Handle routine repair and maintenance of reserve buildings, fences, and trails. Oversees cleaning and maintenance of the housing units, and classrooms. Requires working at a semi-skilled level in the following trades and operational duties: construction, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, fence building and repair and trails maintenance. Maintains traps and bait to reduce rodent infestation of buildings and grounds. Requires working from plans or verbal instructions, making computations, estimating materials and costs. Coordinates repairs with outside vendors as needed. Monitors and inspects work products of vendors and contractors. Oversees fire safety infrastructure and routinely inspects fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and other safety equipment. Performs other tasks at the discretion of the Reserve Director.
- 25% Resource Management - Under general supervision of Reserve Director, is responsible for the management and maintenance of the Valentine reserve at large, including gates and fences, roads, spring-fed waterlines, and natural areas. Manages vegetation to reduce fire risk, and control invasive species. Maintains the Reserve's network of trails. Maintains the integrity of fencing around the reserve and post no-trespassing signs on the boundary fence as needed. Independently performs custodial care for buildings and grounds on a regular basis to maintain high standards of cleanliness and order.
- 20% Administration - Coordinates and communicates tasks and needs with Reserve Director and/or Operations Manager on a daily basis or as needed. Oversees maintenance program for Reserve buildings and grounds; inspects assigned areas to determine the needs and priorities for care; plans the overall preventive maintenance and work activities schedule; makes recommendations and assists in the selection of equipment and materials needed; develops in-service training programs; and keeps extensive records and prepare detailed reports of work done, time spent, and materials used. Maintains a log of service, repair, and replacement events that are not routine and customary. Maintains orderly files of instruction, operation and repair manuals. Substitutes for Director during any absences, which may include orientation for new users, keeping accurate records of reserve use, making major purchases, tracking and submitting receipts and occasionally being available outside of normal working hours. Responds to facility and/or equipment failures and other emergencies. Maintain fire suppression capabilities, and coordinate with local law enforcement and fire agencies on responses to emergencies. Establish safety rules, regulations and procedures for the reserve in compliance with University environmental health and safety policies and procedures. Assist users with their performance of field and laboratory research and teaching activities.
- 15% Maintain Equipment and Vehicles - Performs regular scheduled maintenance on equipment and vehicles. Maintains and repairs hand, power, and large shop tools. Coordinates repairs with outside vendors as needed. Monitors and inspects work products of vendors and contractors. Supervises and maintains workshop and work spaces for staff and research users. Provides shop assistance and support services to researchers.
- 10% Reserve Use Support - Work directly with researchers and university classes to provide information and logistical support in designing and setting up projects to ensure appropriate uses of the reserve and the long-term preservation of the natural resources.
