Overview

This role will support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Suicide Prevention and Office of Research Development as a highly motivated and skilled Human Centered Design (HCD) Generalist. The individual will facilitate HCD workshops to streamline processes and enhance user experiences for new and existing program evaluation dashboards, and will develop reports for implementation. This position requires an independent worker with excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to thrive in an environment with ambiguous tasks.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

    Magnify Interviews and Reports:
    1. Conduct in-depth interviews with stakeholders, including clinicians, community care coordinators, researchers, and other VA staff, to gather insights and feedback.
    1. Analyze interview data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement.
    1. Write comprehensive Magnify reports that synthesize findings and provide actionable recommendations.
    1. Present findings and reports to VA leadership and other stakeholders.
  1. Human Centered Design Workshops:
    1. Facilitate HCD workshops to understand user needs, behaviors, and motivations when developing new dashboards.
    1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design user-centered solutions that enhance leadership's abilities to drive decisions and policies related to suicide prevention.
    1. Create and maintain documentation of workshop outcomes and next steps.
  1. System Integration and Enhancement:
    1. Identify, evaluate, and implement new systems and solutions, or identify enhancements to existing systems; define requirements and specifications.
    1. Ensure customization and integration align with overall architecture, systems, and HCD best practices.
  1. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    1. Provide data analysis expertise to measure and report on progress towards objectives and key results, including both development/delivery metrics and business process outcomes.
    1. Craft compelling stories and visual models to communicate insights and discoveries.
    1. Analyze data to identify insights and trends that inform HCD processes and dashboard development.
    1. Create data visualizations and reports to communicate findings effectively.
  1. User-Centered Design:
    1. Work with users to determine the operational objectives of business needs and elicit requirements.
    1. Create low and high-fidelity wireframes, story maps, and end-user stories in a product backlog, focusing on requirements related to improved usability, user experience, and user adoption and engagement.
  1. Stakeholder Communication:
    1. Communicate with government stakeholders and decision-makers in compelling ways using a variety of visual mediums.
    1. Condense complex business processes into clear and actionable epics, features, and user stories with acceptance criteria.
    1. Work closely with VA teams, including the Office of Suicide Prevention and Office of Research Development, to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives.
    1. Provide regular updates on project progress and any issues or risks.
    1. Contribute to content writing for SharePoint sites, policies, dashboards, literature reviews, and other communication vehicles.
  1. Research and Discovery:
    1. Conduct necessary research and discovery to serve as a de facto subject matter expert, supporting development teams in the integration and development of complex business systems.
    1. Identify core business needs and document concepts of operation, story maps, briefings, and user stories, as needed.
  1. Project Management:
    1. Manage project timelines, deliverables, and resources to ensure projects are completed on time and within scope.
    1. Document project processes, methodologies, and outcomes.
    1. Facilitate any stakeholder briefings, meetings, and/or elicitation sessions. Execute requirements reviews with stakeholders and record results of reviews using VA-approved tools, updating requirements data as a result of the reviews.
  1. Business Process Improvement:
    1. Lead the collection, capture, and management of mission user needs from prioritization, concept development, epic and feature creation, and user story writing to support development and deployment as a business analyst subject matter expert.
    1. Facilitate the gathering of business-focused requirements to support product development teams, including defining the backlog and ensuring the user's perspective is considered.
  1. Group Facilitation:
    1. Experience in group facilitation, including with groups of senior organizational leaders.
    1. Facilitate scheduled monthly and quarterly data runs, dashboard display, and dissemination of findings to end-user groups, including dashboards and data systems to provide information on mental health metrics, mental health clinical staffing and productivity, and other mental health management support data and tools.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Psychology, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Proven experience in conducting interviews and writing reports, preferably in a healthcare or government setting.
  • Experience in facilitating HCD workshops and designing user-centered solutions.
  • Well-developed analytical, diagnostic, and system-thinking skills.
  • Experience in business or requirements analyst role.
  • Experience conducting business analysis and defining system and user requirements.
  • Experience in group facilitation, including with groups of senior organizational leaders.
  • Ability to develop artifacts to support requirements documentation, such as user journey maps, storyboards, data flow diagrams, interface analyses, and/or information architecture diagrams.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience applying design thinking/HCD principles and tools to solve client challenges.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous and dynamic environment.
  • Experience in business process improvement.

Preferred:

  • Experience with agile and design tools, such as Jira, Confluence, Mural, Figma, etc.
  • Previous experience with conducting research and writing content in the mental and/or behavioral health space.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools.
  • Experience working in an agile framework.
  • Professional industry standard certification in human centered design.
  • Familiarity designing interfaces in SharePoint

Target salary range: $75,000 - 97,000. Disclaimer: The salary range displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is not a guarantee of compensation. Individual salaries are determined by various factors including, but not limited to location, internal equity, business considerations, client contract requirements, and candidate qualifications, such as education, experience, skills, and security clearances.
