Position Summary

The Analyst Energy Portfolio Analytics position supports quantitative analysis functions for the Energy Portfolio Analytics (EPA) section of the Integrated System Planning Department. The role takes direction from the Manager of Generation & New Tech Planning in the EPA group. The role requires research and analysis to support planning, budgeting, and decision-making for CPS Energy generation resources. Management of data and information and communication and presentation of analysis methodologies and results are required.

Grade: 16

Qualifications may warrant placement in a different job level.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Researches and provides cost and performance information for resource option modeling and decision support for all types of energy technologies such as solar, wind, gas, nuclear, energy storage, and other types of new and emerging technologies.
  • Develops and manages long-range cost forecasts for energy resources, products, and other items related to resource planning.
  • Researches market information and works with CPS Energy internal subject matter experts and consultants to support forecast developments.
  • Stays abreast of key energy policies and regulations that may impact cost, planning and decision-making for generation resources.
  • Provides analysis support on various type of projects such as new power plant projects, plant upgrade and retirement decisions and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) on solar, wind, energy storage and other types of resources.
  • Uses excel and other computer-based models to conduct analysis
  • Uses economic principles such as time value of money, real and nominal dollars, discount factor, and weighted average cost of capital to determine Present Values, Net Present Values, Levelized costs, rates of return and other values.
  • Presents analysis methodologies and results to internal stakeholders, providing recommendations as needed.
  • Performs other research and analysis as assigned.
  • Performs tasks with occasional supervision and support from EPA Management and other senior team members.


Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Understanding of basic principles of electricity production, power plant operations, and electricity and fuel markets.
General knowledge of the CPS Energy Resource Portfolio and other Resources in the long-range plan or under consideration.
Knowledge of ERCOT Market principles and protocols.
Knowledge of Utility Principles.
Ability to work on cross-functional teams.
Experience in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Advanced analytics experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited university, particular an MBA
  • Knowledge and experience in energy production cost modeling using tools such as Aurora and Gen Trader

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering or related field from an accredited university. OR Critical analytical experience demonstrated in a similar position.

The work environment includes extensive indoor work, computer usage, manual dexterity, talking on the phone and in-person, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
Must have the ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, and other business-related events.
Physical Demands
