About the College/Unit/Department
UGA is a research-intensive land-grant university, ranked 18th among public universities, and reported over $600 million dollars in research expenditures in the last fiscal year. Research in the Department of Chemistry spans a broad range of established and emerging subdisciplines in the chemical sciences, such as Physical, Organic, Analytical, Inorganic, Chemical Biology, Materials Chemistry, and Chemical Education. The Department of Chemistry is home to 28 full-time tenure track faculty, 12 full-time Lecturers, 7 Academic Professionals, 163 graduate students, and 180 undergraduate students as well as lab and office staff. There are outstanding opportunities for collaborations with faculty across the Franklin College's physical and life sciences departments, as well as with faculty in the Colleges of Engineering, VetMed, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Medicine, among others. The department maintains core facilities in NMR, Mass Spectrometry, Electron Microscopy, and X-Ray Crystallography. UGA is located in the vibrant city of Athens in the northern Piedmont region of Georgia. Athens is 65 miles east of Atlanta, less than two hours from the Chattahoochee National Forest and southern Appalachian Mountains, and within easy driving distance of the Atlantic coast.
