Position Summary
This is a journeyman level of skilled trade position for the operation and maintenance of the UGA campus building HVAC systems and perform in the operation, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of some complex building HVAC systems and components. This position needs a journeyman level of mechanical skills and technical knowledge for performing checks to ensure HVAC systems are delivering the correct air volumes at the air delivery points. In
addition, knowledge of chillers, cooling towers, water treatment systems, air handlers, terminal units, water coils, pumps, valves, and motor starters, pneumatic controls, and Building Automation Systems ( BAS). This position works independently to complete tasks within this competency and is directly responsible for maintaining conditions in some of the most critical research spaces on campus. The HVAC Technician I is expected to have a journeyman level of expertise of HVAC systems and components and will require direct supervision from higher-level technicians at times on systems that are more complex.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • The principles, practices, theories and techniques of maintaining, repairing, operating and installing HVAC systems and equipment and related components.
  • The principles, practices and techniques of distribution and control of air, water and steam.
  • The principles, practices and techniques of brazing and soldering.
  • The principles and practices of thermal dynamics of the refrigerant cycle.
  • The hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance, repair, operations and installation of HVAC systems and equipment, and related components.
  • The applied chemical water treatment procedures necessary to maintain non-corrosive systems.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, working overhead, climbing stairs, using regular and extended ladders throughout 8-hour work shift.
  • Lift up to 75lbs and work under adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).

Repairs and replaces piping, valves, and other components used in our chilled and hot water and steam distribution systems. Repairs or replaces wire, fuses, switches, relays, current transducers, capacitors and motor starters; solders and brazes line connections

Monitors and operates HVAC system controls and equipment in accordance with established schedule and makes adjustments to hydronic valve actuators, switches, and other controls to meet demand.
